Xbox One no longer requires plugged-in Kinect, Whitten says

4.6
Xbox One does not need the Kinect sensor in order to function normally, Xbox Corporate VP Marc Whitten tells IGN. This runs contrary to previous statements: In May, Microsoft Studios Corporate VP Phil Spencer said the Xbox One would require the Kinect to be plugged in.

It's unclear whether this is a shift in policy or phrasing, but Whitten says that while ditching Kinect may limit the console's capabilities, the sensor isn't a necessary piece of equipment at all times. Instead, you'll only need it for voice- and motion-based navigation features, or to play games like Fantasia: Music Evolved, which rely on the sensor.

"Games use Kinect in a variety of amazing ways, from adding voice to control your squad mates, to adding lean and other simple controls beyond the controller, to full immersive gameplay," he says. "That said, like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn't plugged in, although you won't be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor."

Clean out some extra space on the entertainment center or in the closet: it depends on what you play.

-Mafia- wow thank god, seems like this new xbox wont really be to bad, i like that Microsoft is listening to what the people want

You think they are listening to us? Oh, you're **** nuts.

At one point they were listening to us, the reversal of DRM, through the power of their sales falling below Sony. . What got them to change Kinect, that I do not know.

They weren't listening to us. They were listening to their pockets.

Vancouver_Canucks Dont know how this can be seen as good news. All of these changes have happened because of hate from "fans" and well if they had listened to what the fans/customers wanted in the first place we would have all of these changes. If they keep changing stuff before the console is released then god knows what they are going to do when the Xbox One is released in November. Its losing all of its unique features and it really is becoming a very updated Xbox 360, there isnt much difference between them any more apart from the livestreaming/in built recorder and even more tv. You can hate all you want but i do not want to be with a company that cant see what customers want in the first place and keep changing things left, right and center.

The features they have changed was because these fans was going crazy about it, 95%+ of console players dont know what DRM does, they didnt want it, personally i wanted it, the kinect everyone thinks it spies on them, they have given you the chance to unplug it, it still adds money to the console im not willing to pay because i dont want the kinect, waiting for it to be released without the kinect, then i will pick 1 up
