Xbox One no longer requires plugged-in Kinect, Whitten says

4.6
Xbox One does not need the Kinect sensor in order to function normally, Xbox Corporate VP Marc Whitten tells IGN. This runs contrary to previous statements: In May, Microsoft Studios Corporate VP Phil Spencer said the Xbox One would require the Kinect to be plugged in.

It's unclear whether this is a shift in policy or phrasing, but Whitten says that while ditching Kinect may limit the console's capabilities, the sensor isn't a necessary piece of equipment at all times. Instead, you'll only need it for voice- and motion-based navigation features, or to play games like Fantasia: Music Evolved, which rely on the sensor.

"Games use Kinect in a variety of amazing ways, from adding voice to control your squad mates, to adding lean and other simple controls beyond the controller, to full immersive gameplay," he says. "That said, like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn't plugged in, although you won't be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor."

Clean out some extra space on the entertainment center or in the closet: it depends on what you play.

Mind citing where you came up with that quote?

Major Nelson says Microsoft is 'not going to change anything' in response to the Sony's conference at E3.

Jasonscootboy12 That was stupid. They need to stop listening to their customers and people who havent even played the console yet. They had an idea and need to stick with it.

The only problem was it was a terrible idea. The kinect is both a shoddy controller AND mic, and even you have to admit, people don't like things being forced on them, like several shitty policies and features that ruin the experience. You can't have a good idea without critisism, and if people who don't even play Xbox also start saying their ideas are ****, don't you think there is something wrong there?
I'm sorry but have you tried the new kinect ? No? How do you know how good it is then? The new kinect has been worked on and optimized where kinect 1 was a quick and sudden release to try compete with the Wii. Unless you have tried something don't comment bad things about it.

But yet those same people can watch the videos showcasing it and its features.

Just, no...

I realise how much effort and how much has changed about the kinect....i still dont want it, id never use it for playing games, the games for it sucked, the mic part was really shitty, not sure how improved it is but if its good it will end up picking everyone who talks in the rooms voice....crappy, then they is the cost of it...why would i want to pay double the price for something im not going to use (They was a rumour the development of the kinect cost more than the xbox itself)

Of course they improve it and of courseeeee the mic is going to be better! It's not about the quality of the kinect, it's about having it plugged up when you aren't using it. Majority of the games for the X1 will have some sort of Kinect Feature but it won't be "required" for you to use it. With that said, no one should have to keep the kinect plugged up 24/7; thus making this change a must.

Yeah, like on fifa where if it heard you swearing you could get booked....are you on about them useless features noone wants in the game? yep, thats worth 150...

Why is it such a big deal? It's a hassle with the current Kinect to plug-in/unplug already, I don't see the new one being any different. It turns off, no need to shuffle around plugging and unplugging over and over.
It also does much more than that, you sir, are coming off as extremely ignorant. Please look into it. Thanks.

The price it adds onto the console -.- **** retard

Leap sounds better, still dont like the xbox one

Why? What now lmao

For me, the exclusives and price just aren't that great. I'll never use the Kinect, I'll never play many of "exclusives" that will be on Xbone (Titanfall will be $60, Blacklight: Retribution is free) just don't strike my fancy. I don't prefer the windows interface and I didn't like the fact that half the games they showed at E3 had some sort of Smartglass selling point to them. At least wit the PS4 they said the Vita would come in handy but not needed.
Then there's the whole list of reasons as to what kind of company would do such a huge 180 on their previous adamant statements until after pre-order numbers were released? I don't like companies that say rude things to people with concerns for their product and instead shut down the interviewers by either dancing around questions or just plain out saying that if you don't like the product "we have the 360".
I'm not saying the Xbone is bad but i'm not liking how Micro$oft is handling their situation. If they had stood their ground then it would of been interesting to see how the consoles actually differed.

I suggest you come up with a better term for it than Xbone, I don't like that.

And justin bieber fan girls don't like us calling justin names...but we do it anyways because no one cares what they think Just like now one cares about how you feel about the xbone. I personally like the look of sony this generation better. The 360 was better than PS3 and the PS2 was better than the Xbox. I am unbiased here as a PC gamer and I like sony now more than Microsoft.

Btw the whole xbox 180 was not because of the customers were complaining. It was the fact that the PS4 was winning. There is no denying even for fanboys on both sides the xbone was losing to the ps4 in popularity. Because of this Microsoft is trying to catch up to its competition and is instead of saying that it is trying catch up to sony they are saying they are listening to their community. If Microsoft monopolized the console industry they would not have changed their policies. But since sony is giving them a huge fight Microsoft was forced to. Capitalism at its best.
