Sony suspends pre-orders for PS4, fearing Christmas stock shortages

4.6
Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One were announced a few months apart, but it’s the latter that’s been generating the lion’s share of headlines, although not always for the best of reasons. Even so, pre-orders for both consoles seem to be doing pretty well by all accounts.

For Sony, PS4 pre-orders are going so well that the company has reportedly directed major retailers in the UK to stop accepting them. As The Telegraph reports, the instruction was given in order to avoid stock shortages, particularly in the lead-up to the all-important holiday season, when the two consoles will go head-to-head in the battle for Christmas sales.

Some retailers believe that Microsoft will soon follow Sony’s lead, by instructing that pre-order books be closed for the Xbox One.

Neither console has a confirmed release date yet, although global retail giant Toys R Us apparently let the cat out of the bag a couple of weeks ago, when its website claimed that the Xbox One would be made available on 29 November, two weeks ahead of the 13 December availability date that it cited for the PS4.

slapshot101 I am surprised they are doing this it is so much money in these pre-orders. I still think they will have enough PS4's to go around even if they keep with pre-orders.

I'm not too sure.. The demand for next generation consoles is really high at the moment. I'm sure there will be enough for everyone in the long run

DavidDo0M I believe "Toys R Us" is incorrect about November 29th as the Xbox One release date. Wal-Mart accidentally said the 27th a few weeks back but I doubt that as well. So do most industry insiders, here is why. November 29th is Black Friday. Only a moron with no mind for business would release a $500 piece of equipment on Black Friday, as many consumers will be committed to buying that TV they saw in the advert or those games that will be $30 each. A release within a week of Black Friday would be a massive marketing blunder. I know a lot of people here dislike Microsoft but you have to give them one thing. They know how to make money. I personally think a more sound judgement would be a release closer to the 14th, maybe even the 21st. Certainly not on Black Friday, or a day or two before.

Side Note, though I personally prefer Xbox, I am not a fanboy. I was strictly PS for many years before I made the switch. As such, I have a lot of respect for Sony and I know that they build quality consoles. I believe both systems will be very impressive and it just comes down to personal preference and choice. I wish I could afford both.

People would be saving their money for black friday so if they had a TV in mind, the Xbox One would not influence their decision.

Smart, they don't want to have low stock on systems, then get another 1000 pre-orders
