Sony: Microsoft adding FIFA 14 to European Xbox One is "kind of odd"

4.4
Last week at Gamescom, Microsoft announced that all of launch versions of the upcoming Xbox One consoles sold in Europe would come with a free digital download copy of FIFA 14. It was seen by many as a way to add some value to Microsoft's product, which at the moment is priced 100 euros more than Sony's upcoming rival console, the PlayStation 4.

But if Europeans thought that Sony was going to add their own free game in with the PS4 in time for its launch, they will likely be disappointed. In an interview with the UK-based Metro website, the head of Sony's PlayStation division in Europe, Jim Ryan, hinted that Microsoft made such a move to boost lagging pre-order sales for the Xbox One.

Ryan said:
It’s perfectly rational when a platform holder, or indeed a publisher, runs a pre-order campaign to engage in promotional behaviour to dial it up if you feel it’s not where you need it to be. That’s a rational thing for any businessman to do. We’re perfectly happy with where our pre-order are.

Ryan added that, in his opinion, giving away a major game like FIFA 14 with the launch of the Xbox One is "kind of odd". So far, Microsoft has not announced a similar free game deal for the US Xbox One launch.

On the subject of the PS4, Ryan said that Sony didn't know yet how many units of the console they would have ready for its launch. Sony announced last week that the PS4 would be released on November 15th in the US and November 29th in Europe and that the company had already received over one million pre-orders for the console.

Pufferfish At least they are giving something to try and make the price more reasonable

It's still a little odd if you ask me

Maybe it's them saying have a game that's been the same for 15 years?

Are you all completely retarded? Europe pays a higher tax on these things that's why Fifa 14 is free, it doesn't fix the territorial price difference but it helps to bring it down a bit.

I'm surprised at Sony, here they are trying to talk smack about Microsoft but they've just proven they can't even understand how basic conversion and import tax works.

Cyimking Yes this is strangely ODD. And due to this being in the UK only, that means that the preorders MUST be very low in that area. Also, EA would be losing money due to this because i don't MS is going to pay EA tons of money for this.

Or how about when you convert how much Europe is paying for it to USD it adds up to be $581 USD. Maybe this is why they added a free game in the UK only because they are paying $81 more then the US.

I agree, but its not 581 USD, but 663,30. This is for the euro, UK a few more dollars

I agree with you. They probably really need more pre orders.

EA in no tlosing money, MS nuys the copies from them.....
europe is just the UK and pre orders for xbox one have gone absolute crazy... can you not read the post on the homepage of this very website?? GAME have stopped taking pre orders and they cannot guarantee anyone who preorders AFTER the 6th of august i think.. in england unless your either really lucky or preordered before the cut off date then you aint getting a console on launch day, its a marketing tactic by making a few available to allow mass public veiwing and private usage but they only have a small amount per store demand is out stripping supply 300 to 1 and every f**ker wants it... meanwhile microsoft cain in pure revenue, they will already have X amount of consoles in a warehouse and the selected first few of the consoles are named "launch day limited edition" they get a nice sticker on the controller, a rare achievement and a years worth of xbox live...i think its abit of a joke how you only get fifa when microsoft could easily vanquish any supply worries with just selling millions of the already to go xbox one`s that are stored away.... people will be getting robbed for there xbox`s...

If I were to buy one based on price, I would save the extra 100 and buy the game and still save money...
