Nintendo Mentions DS Successor (With A Motion Sensor?), Zelda Wii This Year

4.5
Nintendo appears to have made the first comment about a successor to their popular DS.

Speaking to Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata (as first translated by Siliconera, with clarification from Wired's Chris Kohler over Twitter) mentioned a follow-up to the DS would feature higher-resolution visuals (no surprise) and a motion sensor of some sort.

Iwata did not elaborate on what he meant by a motion sensor and whether that would simply be an extension of the touch screen (i.e. adding touch capabilities to both screens) or literally having a sensor that detected physical movement beyond what the camera on the DSi is capable of. Given the DS remains wildly popular and a consistent seller, the answer to that could be far off.

There was also some brief but important news about the upcoming The Legend of Zelda sequel for Wii. Nintendo leader Shigeru Miyamoto once declared his intentions for The Legend of Zelda to arrive in 2010 but wouldn't promise that'd actually happen. In the Asashi Shimbun piece, however, Iwata mentions the follow-up to Twilight Princess would be released before 2010 is up.

Good news, right?

I agree with you Rcoleman.

The DS was fun when i was 10 but a few years on and it just sucks.

I like the ds a lot but they do need to make something new. But a motion sensor would almost make it new so that would be very cool.

I;m not the biggest fan of Nintendo, but i feel they need to calm down and possibly design something new. The Nintendo Ds was cool at first but now it is just getting old in my opinion...
