Grand Theft Auto 5 “feels next-gen” to Rockstar, says firm

Grand Theft Auto 5 may not be releasing on next-gen consoles but the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions feel next-gen to Rockstar.

Speaking with IGN, Rockstar North associate technical director and combat designer Phil Hooker said part of the reason it feels next-gen to the developers is the team was familair with the hardware after developing GTA 4.

“Every aspect of the game had to be better, richer in gameplay and more fluid and knowing we were launching on the same platforms meant we could focus on extracting the most out of those consoles and making the game as fantastic as possible,” said Hooker.

“In the end we surpassed our own expectations and during development I think everyone working on the game has been astounded by improvements to the graphics, or new mechanics, or AI, or mission scope along the way.

“Hopefully the gamers will see all of these improvements at once in one go, compared to GTA 4 this definitely feels ‘next generation’ to us.”

Grand Theft Auto 5 will be released on September 17.

It does look next gen, the game looks really good, well the gameplay, who knows about the plot...

TurtleOrgans Don't get me wrong about this game i am rly excited about it, but i think when big things happen (such as multiple explosions or alot of cars on screen) i think we are gonna see FPS Drop.


I don't think that will happen, they won't make the game if the console couldn't handle the FPS.

I'd agree to this statement i have played gtav and it feels different to normal Xbox360 games, the graphics are defiantly at a higher quality they must be abusing the consoles hardware.

Dr-Ponyfile In my opinion it probably will feel next gen in my opinion it looks like it too. GTAV will be a fantastic game and will keep me occupied for weeks, months to come.

yea the multiplayer will keep me occupied for so long !


Ya same here man, I'll be playing the multiplayer a lot. Sandbox games never get boring, unless you're not creative xD


The multiplayer looks amazing! Too bad it doesn't come out until October 1st.


i think multiplayer is available like free roam with your friends, but official GTA Online doesn't drop until the 1st (ranking up and earning money and customising a character. Its and i quote an ever changing world so rockstar will update the map and have new things for you to do from the 1st to far into the future). Someone was playing online multiplayer last night just messing around on free roam.
