Grand Theft Auto 5 “feels next-gen” to Rockstar, says firm

Grand Theft Auto 5 may not be releasing on next-gen consoles but the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions feel next-gen to Rockstar.

Speaking with IGN, Rockstar North associate technical director and combat designer Phil Hooker said part of the reason it feels next-gen to the developers is the team was familair with the hardware after developing GTA 4.

“Every aspect of the game had to be better, richer in gameplay and more fluid and knowing we were launching on the same platforms meant we could focus on extracting the most out of those consoles and making the game as fantastic as possible,” said Hooker.

“In the end we surpassed our own expectations and during development I think everyone working on the game has been astounded by improvements to the graphics, or new mechanics, or AI, or mission scope along the way.

“Hopefully the gamers will see all of these improvements at once in one go, compared to GTA 4 this definitely feels ‘next generation’ to us.”

Grand Theft Auto 5 will be released on September 17.

The graphics look astounding for being on the 360, it really looks "Next Gen".

In my opinion it probably will feel next gen in my opinion it looks like it too. GTAV will be a fantastic game and will keep me occupied for weeks, months to come.

Graphics are no where near GTA IV maxed out in 1080p on PC.. With that said, theyre good for the consoles.. However textures don't stream to efficiently.. Things wont render until they get anout 20m from ou, and its REALLY noticeable.. however game play is amazing as is the story also. Im sure GTA online will not disappoint.. BTW, I have the game pre-ordered, but if you can get it early, why not? (I work at Best Buy.. I have a LEGIT copy ;P)

ProffesorGenki1 Rockstar really shouldn't of announced the release of GTA V on September 17th. One the new consoles are coming soon as in a few months and Rockstar should of waited until the new consoles came out to see what they can handle then they should've made the game better and improved it alot more because now Rockstar is in a sticky situation now


They worked on this for years. So they didn't even have the tools to even begin working on one for a Next-Gen Game. They need to worry about the PS3 and Xbox 360 that they actually were working on trying to max the graphics. I don't think they're in a sticky situation, everyone has a PS3 or Xbox 360 and will buy this if they like it.


i watched an interview and gta was already in development back when xbox one didn't even exist. sounds crazy but it was being developed even before the last GTA came out so in a way the last one was just a filler to me but still a complete and good game. they have dropped a total of 170mill on this game and there was no way they were going to change when they heard about the next gen cause they would have had to start all over. it is said that this is the most expensive game ever built. shoot i've been waiting on this game for years now its been kicked back several times over the last 3 years not including development time in 08 cause they're prime reason was to go out with a bang on this generation and push the xbox 360 to its breaking limits

Urf I watched a live stream earlier of the game being played. It definitely did seem next-gen or PC. It was a beautiful game and looked amazing and gameplay was fluent.


The gameplay graphics people streamed was crappy. i can't wait to see what the game looks like on my TV.


The guy was streaming in pure 1080p. It wasn't "crappy graphics." It was straight from his TV.

Yeah, I am going to like the size of the map aswell and all of the stuff you can do in it.

I always thought that the GTA4 map was way to small.

I expect nothing less from Rockstar to be honest. 5 years planning, with some of the best creators/ developers there is and a budget of $300million(?) to work with. The game that will make this current gen go out with a bang.
