Steam surpasses 65 million users
Steam reached its current milestone as Valve prepares to launch Steam Machines, an initiative that aims to bring PC gaming to the living room with dedicated hardware, a platform-specific operating system, and a gaming-optimized controller. Currently, Steam hosts over 3,000 downloadable games from a broad spectrum of publishers and independent developers.
"The main goal of Steam has always been to increase the quality of the user's experience by reducing the distance between content creators and their audience," said Valve president Gabe Newell. "As the platform grows, our job is to adapt to the changing needs of both the development and user communities. In the coming year, we plan to make perhaps our most significant collaborations with both communities through the Steam Dev Days and the Steam Machines beta."

As much players that Steam has, I think that most of the accounts that they have are inactive. I myself have about 5 accounts that I do not use.

TTG_VelocityFrenzyRGKatsumiKAQ Well that's good maybe this could be the future of gaming :)
PC gaming is rising in popularity pretty quickly so maybe you could call it that. I wouldn't mind seeing steam become more popular in the coming years
When our generation get older and get good jobs they will most likely get a gaming pc. I think the only reason pc gaming is rising because people are finally getting jobs and are able to afford custom pc's.
You make it sound like all gamers live in the basement of a shelter home with a ps3 or xbox360 in their lap because they can't afford a home, let alone a pc. PC gaming is rising because it's the dominant platform for high end quality gaming. You are constantly locked to the way Microsoft or Sony want you to experience their consoles and have no freedom to do what you want to your console. With a PC, you can constantly upgrade it's components which makes a PC last a dozen or so years. If you can afford a 300-500 dollar gaming console, I'm sure you can afford a 700-900 dollar gaming PC. Buy it all in bulk, premade, or piece by piece, which will eventually allow you to fully finish your rig.
The main thing that pushes people away from PC gaming is that fact that it is kind of intimidating when it comes to building your own rig and dealing with the various errors that you can experience. It certainly is not for a casual gamer who just likes turning on their device and having a fun session. While PC is surely the dominant platform over consoles a console does have one massive benefit over PC gaming. That is approachability and ease of use, hence why you see so many people using consoles in this day and age. Lets not mention that people inexperienced in the field will be further intimidated when it comes to their specifications and the first thing they will think is a 670-690 and i7 processor, these being generally expensive. Or they will buy a pre-build and i think we can all agree that is not very smart
I am not implying that nobody got into PC gaming in the past, it is simply becoming more popular because people are deepening their knowledge in the field.
