Steam surpasses 65 million users

Valve announced that its Steam platform now has 65 million users, with the last 12 months alone bringing a 30 percent increase in active accounts.

Steam reached its current milestone as Valve prepares to launch Steam Machines, an initiative that aims to bring PC gaming to the living room with dedicated hardware, a platform-specific operating system, and a gaming-optimized controller. Currently, Steam hosts over 3,000 downloadable games from a broad spectrum of publishers and independent developers.

"The main goal of Steam has always been to increase the quality of the user's experience by reducing the distance between content creators and their audience," said Valve president Gabe Newell. "As the platform grows, our job is to adapt to the changing needs of both the development and user communities. In the coming year, we plan to make perhaps our most significant collaborations with both communities through the Steam Dev Days and the Steam Machines beta."

Ice_Rink steam really has a good concept, xbox1 should have kept it


People are not purely using steam because of the DRM, many people are actually against steams DRM. The good thing about steam is that it allows easy online/offline gaming

That is more than xbox isnt it? but im not supprised tbh i perfere pc gaming but my laptop cant handle games very well plus all my mates play xbox

Dreams thats alot of people should be well over 100 million by beginning of next year


Gaining 45 million accounts within under 2 months isn't really realistic.. I would say that they will be at 100 million by the beginning of 2015 if not a little later

Steam is growing all the time, it's *only* 65 million now because they had to start from such a low base.

PC gaming was said to be dead about 5 years ago (the latest in a long line of console fanboys hoping it would die because... console fanboys are bad, wicked people). It's now definitely not dead. Even Namco has a PC game, for flip's sake! So, Valve basically single handedly restored the PC from death back to life, and it has all happened in the past 5 years. Yes, Steam existed for a long time before that, but the sales really only started then and no one could afford to ignore it any more. It will be 100 million before too long. The next gen console releases will dent the growth a bit, for awhile, but then Steam will still be there, PCs will still keep getting stronger, and the Steam sales will continue.
