Activision: Call of Duty: Ghosts has shipped $1 billion

The video game industry is now a battle of billion dollar launches, with Activision announcing this morning that Call of Duty: Ghosts has shipped a billion dollars worth of the game into retail. The semi-awkward victory lap comes on the day Activision is set to announce its second quarter results.

"Call of Duty is by far the largest console franchise of this generation," said Activision CEO Bobby Kotick as part of the announcement – a very, very accurate assessment. "And in the last 12 months, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, including its digital content, generated more revenues than any other console game ever has in a single year. Although it is too early to assess sell-through for Call of Duty: Ghosts, it's launching at a time when the franchise has never been more popular."

The billion dollar mark was likely chosen to contrast the game's accomplishment with that of Grand Theft Auto 5, which sold $1 billion to consumers in three days, where as Call of Duty shipped a billion dollars worth of game to retail stores. Call of Duty: Ghosts was the "most pre-ordered" game at GameStop this year.

theartftw For those unsure, the figures GTA developers brought out were the same. These sales are indications of the shops/stores/businesses interest in the product, more than it is the actual sales. This is more or less as close as you are gonna get to real purchases, as finding out how many each retailer sells is impossible.. In short, did 1 billion dollars worth of Ghosts get sold? Yes, to gamestop, game, and various other retailers.
All retailers have game logs. Facts are GTA 5 SOLD $1b worth of games and Ghosts SHIPPED $1b worth of games. Nuff said

1$ billion shipped and 1$ billion sold are two completely different things. all the stores who have extra copies and didn't sell them is what they mean. i bought the game and it isnt bad but most of my friends who are die hard cod fans didnt buy it.

If you read it says sold to retailers, this doesn't mean that amount of people (customers) have brought it. Unlike GTA which did sell 1 billion to customers.
