Phil Spencer “resolutiongate” will blow over once Xbox One is released

4.6
Microsoft Studios VP Phil Spencer is of the opinion people shouldn’t be so focused on the 1080/720p and 30/60 fps debates going on at the moment in regards to next-gen, in fact, he has defended Xbox One, saying the focus shouldn’t be on the numbers in the first place.

Speaking with Shacknews during the Xbox One showcase, Spencer said it’s the experience that matters, and once Xbox One is released, “resolutiongate” will blow over.

“Go look at the games. Go play the games and tell us what you think about what they look. Right now, gamers don’t have the games to go play. They can’t walk into their local store and play the games. So, it doesn’t really surprise me that they’re going to focus on the specs that they can. I don’t criticize anyone for doing that. In the end, we play the games, not the resolution,” said Spencer.

“Our proposition with Xbox One starts with the games: we’ve got a great launch lineup of over 20 games. We’ve got some great franchises, great third-party relationships. And we’ve built a system that natively understands you and your entertainment. I think in the long run, our hope and bet is that power will play out and show people that everything they’ve learned about gaming on 360 can now augment everything they can do on their television.”

“You look at high-end PC games right now. If you were just looking at screen resolution and framerate, you’d be a PC gamer. Because you can spend $800 on a video card and put it in. I’ve built those rigs. I can play those games. And I understand that. But that doesn’t mean the best games are there. It doesn’t mean it’s the best all-in-one experience.”

Meanwhile, over on Eurogamer, the developers themselves comment on the resolution/frame rate debate, discussing why respective titles such as Ryse: Son of Rome, Dead Rising 3, Forza 4, Kinect Sports Rivals and others run the way they do.

According to Crytek’s design director on Ryse, P J Esteves, “It’s a lot less to do with the actual specs and more to do with what you do with those specs.”

Xbox One is out November 22.

AIien "We play games, not the resolution." He's got a point.

He does, but PS fanboys will take facts and skew them to their liking.

KAQ 720p is really bad :/ but i do like playing and watching in 1080p :/

The Xbox One still has a better video card, making the graphics still better than PS4.

DHL If they're going to cost 350+ I'd expect them to have 1080p and 60 fps...

You can't build a gaming pc for that price which will play modern games at that res and fps on the ultra settings.

If you think that games are on ultra settings on the Xbox one and Ps4, you have obviously never played a single game on PC on ultra.

Console games are on medium settings.

If you're going to start throwing around accusations about the PS4 being more graphically advance then I suggest you do some research.

You see, it's mostly due to Sony making games mandatory 1080p, everyone thinks nextgen is just 1080p at 60FPS.

Microsoft are allowing developers to pick their resolution, and they learned this from the Xbox 360 launch.

Sony are doing what Microsoft done at the launch of the 360, dictate what developers must do. Sony tells them 1080p minimum, even if the game suffers blurry graphics or FPS drops, it doesn't matter, as you can see in the Battlefield 4 comparison video.

If you're wondering why Microsoft made it mandatory for developers to have games at 720p 2xAA, they learned the hard way, it's not always possible or consumers will suffer.

I really do feel sorry for the developers that can't hit 1080p on the PS4 since Sony won't be happy.

In my opinion, Microsoft are doing it right, yeah I want larger numbers but I also want a game that looks sexy & has loads of stuff happening all over the place, if 1080p doesn't allow that then I don't want it.

Games are meant to be about fun, rather than nitpicking about visuals we can barely see.

The Xbox is a custom built system, with many things that can't be translated into TFlops, on the other hand the PS4 is more or less completely off the shelf PC parts. Yes the PS4 has a higher TFlop count, but then again the Xbox One has 15 custom processors for doing stuff that the PS4 has to do all on its CPU/GPU & the on the Xbox One these are free for the system, what that means is that it's not using GPU/CPU cycles.

In the end both systems are great in there own right and in a few years no one will care. Anyone saying otherwise is either blind or Microsoft hating.

VANAGON I run 720p fine to me, its not like I need a 4k tv for video games haha.

but 1080 is so much better than 720p you dont need a really pricey television to run 1080p

That doesn't mean that the experience would be any worse.
From pure specification, the Xbone seems like a much better console right now.

Cyimking Honestly as long as the graphics look good then im fine with it. But imo some games SHOULD look as real as possible. For example forza. It's a racing game. The background should feel and look real. However for games like BF4 and COD, i do not expect it to look like real life war. lol

This is still achievable with a 720p game. As long as it is made well

Obviously 1080p looks really nice, but I don't mind 720p, as long as games that should have good graphics get them, then I'm fine.
