Xbox One day one patch is not “really an optional thing,” says Penello

Xbox One will require a day one update to the system in order for it to function, according to the firm’s senior director of product management Albert Penello.

Speaking with Engadget, Penello said the system will not be usable straight out of the box, as consumers will be able to do “nothing” until the update is downloaded.

“You need the day one update,” he said. “Functionally, you will be able to do very little without taking the day one update. A lot of the apps come with the day one update because they wouldn’t have even been done.

“You’re gonna need to take this update. It’s not gonna be really an optional thing.”

Sony will release a day one update for PlayStation 4as well, for the same reasons as Microsoft, and to also to add updates to some of the system’s basic functions.

Xbox One launches November 22.

I would imagine the people that don't have access to the internet.

J-E-T-S What angers me is I have a data cap and these stupid updates chew up around 10% of my monthly allowance sometimes. If its over a gig I am going to be one p i s s e d off ****


I thought data caps were for cell phone services, not internet usage on a computer?
What internet provider do you use?

The main people who care are people with no internet, a slow internet connection or a data cap.


Even if it was optional, the people that didn't download it couldn't play with the people that did, so it is a good thing they made in mandatory.

Nearly all consoles need a patch out of box.
I don't know why you would try and set it up without an internet connection in the first place.

Lavish As long as it isn't as big as a fail as the PS4, I will be fine.
I would hate to be stuck looking at a updating screen for ages like some had to with PS.

Hopefully it doesn't turn out like that for most people. I used to have a data cap and upgraded for reasons such as that.
