Sony discussing MP3, CD playback in PS4 after surprising fan feedback

When Sony outlined the PS4's hardware features in October, some potential customers were so shocked that the console wouldn't support MP3 files or CDs that they vowed to cancel their pre-orders. President of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida was surprised by such a heated response.

"The biggest surprise for us all internally at Sony was there are so many people who passionately reacted to our announcement that there's no MP3 support or CD support on day one," Yoshida said on Giant Bomb's Interview Dumptruck, caught by Eurogamer. "It's not like we actively decided, 'Let's not do this feature so people will have to subscribe to Music Unlimited. The focus has been more on the game features. Some of the features we wanted but we couldn't get in on day one."

The PS4 team in Japan is figuring out the best way to implement the missing media features, Yoshida said: "We didn't really think about MP3 or CD. We thought, 'We're going to do that eventually ....' It caught us off-guard. People don't really talk about these features, right? Some people get really mad and [say,] 'I'll cancel my pre-order!' So as we speak, people in Japan – the system guys – are discussing when we can put these features in."

daRealRush Why are people complaining about MP3, and CD Playback? It's not like you can't listen to music on your Phone, Computer, iPod, MP3 Player, iPad, etc.


It is just more convenient to be able to play games and listen to music in one place, instead of switching between devices.


well thats a simple fix, if you truly care about having your games and music on the same device stick with a PC

DJxReWinD What I don't get is how they didn't have time to implement these features already, especially if the console was made just for gaming. I mean Microsoft built their console around gaming but with multiple other aspects such as TV, Snap chat, and much more yet they still had time to put these components in....... I'm getting my own ps4 in a while and I'm getting the xbox one at launch to me this is kind of sad on sony's end


Who uses MP3s and DVD? this isn't sad no one cares. Xbox has all of those features because its a All-In-One Entertainment System.

I will be getting both but the majority of my games will be on PS4 because from what i read on these gaming sites, its well worth it.


With all honesty I do use those options though from time to time, the reason being is that I like to listen to my music through my turtle beach at full blast lol

doesn't matter. if it can happen on the old system it sure as hell better be brought into the next gen system. it's common sense.


the old systems are backwards compatible but the new aren't there are down sides to both console respect sony and microsoft.

Exactly? Like I am going to pop a CD in there, I'd just pull my iPAD out an listen or go on the browser e.e

although i havent come across anyone saying: 'I'll cancel my pre-order!' as said up there.
