10-year-old scores felony charge through 'Minecraft

The online building-block game Minecraft is a great tool that can lead to the strengthening of a player's creative and strategic abilities.

For one unfortunate child, though, the game led to something else: a felony charge.

An unidentified 74-year-old grandmother from Lincoln, Neb., received a call from her bank notifying her of suspicious charges on her credit card account. It turns out that the thief was not some random cyber criminal, but rather her 10-year-old grandson. The child had managed to rack up over $800 on the card through Minecraft.

The only way the woman could reverse the charges was to file a police report. When she did so, the boy attracted police officers' suspicion of felony theft. Because of his age, the boy's case will be heard in juvenile court.

While the Xbox Live Marketplace does indeed charge for some additions to the game, such as themes or additional characters and tools, nothing is anywhere near $800. Most items available for purchase run anywhere from $1 to $4.

On the other hand, $800 can buy a lot of pickaxes.

It's more up to the parents actually controlling the kids. Why she would just leave a 10 year old unsupervised while your credit card is easily accessible is beyond me


Stealing a credit card that is in your own house is rather easy do you except to put your credit card/wallet/purse on top of the refrigerator every time you come home? I mean come on it's easier just to leave it on the counter or your desk or even in a drawer somewhere but still easily obtainable by any one.

Your kid should know better. He's 10, not 4. He should know how much $800 is.

If he was playing on PC then I can understand how he could manage to do that buy buying ranks and so on within servers...but on Xbox? I have no idea how he could do that so he must of bought other games and DLC of the marketplace as well

She wanted to reverse the charges from her credit card if i read the article correctly.


Exactly, it was the only way she could of canceled the payment.

I still don't understand how he managed to spend $800 though.

I'm sorry to say this but I would of done the same it's better for a guilty party suffer the consequences then for a family to live on the streets because of said guilty party.
