Activision threatens subscription fees for Call of Duty

3.9
In a recent conference call with investors, Activision Blizzard revealed a new Call of Duty, announced that a subscription for the series is in the works, and hinted that they might not release as many big, plastic peripherals this year.

According to Ars Technica, Call of Duty 7 will renew Activision Blizzard's annual assault on holiday sales charts in 2010. This isn't a huge surprise - the company has released a new Call of Duty game every single year for the past five years. However, they've never released a Call of Duty with a subscription plan, and that may change soon. During the conference call, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said, "If you think about the success we've had in other product categories on subscription, you can get a sense of the direction that we want to take that franchise."

That's right, Activision Blizzard is pondering a Calling Plan of Duty, though you probably won't see one in this year's game. That's because it's in development at traditionally conservative Treyarch Studios, not Infinity Ward, which made last year's best-selling game. Furthermore, Destructoid quotes a source which claims that Infinity Ward is hard at work on a Call of Duty massively-multiplayer online game, which certainly fits the profile of a subscription-based title.

if they actually do this i will be really angry. i already paid 60 bucks for this game, and its nowhere near as go as MW1 this game doesn't patch any bugs, and i feel like this game has a lot more lag to it, visible or not. not to mention we already PAY to play online, so if i have to pay to play call of duty online, they will have one less customer. thats just downright greedy

whats next? freaking paying 200$ just to breath...Infinity Ward and Activision have enough money already...dont need to rip us off anymore

nice :) that means that the price for me to pay the next call of duty will be:

£60 + £45 + £40 + subscription = 145+ to play one game? If this does happen it will be the end of Call of Duty.

Have they not noticed the massive fail that is MW2?

Its crap WaW was quite bad. Cod4 Though was amazing. Re-release that with better GFX, same maps but new engine. Counter strike was hugely popular, 4 years later the re-released it on a new engine and it is still one of the most popular games, why dont activision.

If they wanna charge that badly charge it to PS3 gamers, they deserve it for not having to pay online fee's already!

And even then they complain!

I would definitely organize a global boycott of the game if they made subscriptions. WE (Refering to the loyal gamers of xbox :) ) are already hammered with xbox live fees. This subscription fee wouldnt make things any better, and its just shows the greed of IW and its producers and how they arent satsified with the already successful sales.
