Xbox One coined as ‘disc-less’ console for some time, Spencer reveals
Speaking with OXM, Spencer revealed that the notion of a disc-less Xbox One console was on the table until the middle of last year, but was subsequently dropped following Microsoft’s reveal.
He added, “Obviously, after the announcement and E3, there was some feedback about what people wanted to change. There was a real discussion about whether we should have an optical disc drive in Xbox One or if we could get away with a purely disc-less console, but when you start looking at bandwidth and game size, it does create issues.
“So we decided – which I think was the right decision – to go with the Blu-ray drive and give the people an easy way to install a lot of content. From some of those original thoughts, you saw a lot of us really focusing on the digital ecosystem you see on other devices – thinking of and building around that.”
Do you agree that discs are still the way to go for now, or would you like to see a purely digital machine at some point? Let us know below.

I downloaded DR3 when I got the console and it took me no more than a half hour. Thanks Optic Fibre Broadband, thanks.

Sempiternal I wouldn't want to have to download games to play. It would take hours with my 2mb/s download speeds.
I like actually having the disc anyway, like owning CDs, I could download the music but it's nice to always have a physical copy.
2mb/s download speeds.. Imagine having to download every single game you want to play with 150kb/s.. i know a few people (including myself) that would have to do that

A discless console is silly at this point in time. Most internet speeds are far from good and it would be ridicous. And furthermore then 500GB hard drive would hardly hold anything, especially since in reality I believe it is about 400GB maby less

iriisqx I like the idea of the disc-less console, but it would be better to do in about 10-15(?) Years, because the technology would be better by than.
I wouldn't quite say 15 years. I would think that the next generation of consoles may be relatively discless.

GibbityTree LOL Microsoft, almost when bankrupt for a second eh?
YEAH,it's not like their company has over 70 billion dollars, or anything. If not one person bought the Xbox one, they wouldn't be close lol

Don't get me wrong when I say this but you can't half-a** your way through a transition. Microsoft had originally announced a disk required yet digitally accessible console similar to that of Steam making you buy the disk just to install them on your computer. Only difference between these two would be that Microsoft would make the disk like a key for the one account it was installed on so there wouldn't be any sharing. The Xbone would've been nice to either stay straight up disk or go full out digital, either way, the soft transition that was imagined wasn't a good idea at all.
