Gabe Newell shrugs off Xbox One momentum
Valve managing director Gabe Newell appeared somewhat indifferent to the recent success of Xbox One during his CES presentation on Monday.
Following the announcement by Microsoft that Xbox One sales have reached three million units since the console's November 22 launch, Newell was asked by a CES audience member whether Valve's Steam Machines can manage such a feat over the next twelve months.
"Well, it'd take a while for them to catch up. I mean, we're at 65 million," Newell joked, referring to the recent announcement that Steam's user base has reached that milestone.
The Seattle corporation's new ambition is to expand Steam to the living-room with a new line of console-like devices. A line of thirteen separate Steam Machines, each with different specs and price points, was revealed by valve at CES.
Prices of the systems range from $499 up to the multiple thousands of dollars, and Valve is bundling each one with the idiosyncratic Steam Controller.
The driving ambition is for the Steam PC and Mac platform, which carries more than 2,000 games, to be fully accessible on each Linux-based Steam Machine. Presently, less than 300 Steam games are currently coded for those Linux devices, though the number is expected to naturally increase.
Newell did not directly answer the question and offer an outlook on the sales momentum of Steam Machines.
"Part of why we think that this is the right direction to go in is that we can benefit from everything that people have already done," he added.
"If I buy a game on Steam and am running it on Windows, I can go to one of the Steam Machines and I already have the game. So the benefit as a developer, you benefit as a consumer, having that PC experience extended into the living room."

GeneticsBeetequatiionzzzKatsumiZinx Xbox One is better. Enough said.
It isn't... It really isn't, that's what you are failing to understand. The only thing that a console really has over a PC is ease of use, convenience and in some cases portability. The majority of PC's can be build at the same expense as the Xbox One. They can be upgraded while the Xbox One cannot, requiring you to spend another $500+ each generation. PC supports free online play while the Xbox One... not so much. You can get most if not all the Xbox Ones 'entertainment applications' on the PC. PC tends to have better sales on games, meaning you can usually pick them up for a fraction of a price of that on console. PC has just as many awesome exclusives coming out if you actually look into it. PC is also much more customization than the Xbox One, allowing you to do as much as install a whole new operating system. What you need to remember is that the Xbox One is a small PC with its own unique operating system.
Umm, You said that the pc sales on games are better. Where did you get that from? Last time I check consoles sell more in games than pc. Do some research buddy.
He means by sales as in 75% off. Steam recently ended their winter sale where 80% of the games on Steam were 50%+ off. These are a lot better. Well also PC does have the worlds most popular non mobile game which is free to play (League of Legends).
LoL is pretty fun. Generally all my friends at school even talk about.
I find PC gaming to be less fun then console gaming. I also find it that console gaming is more social than PC gaming.

I also see why he wouldn't care too much. PC Gaming is growing in popularity extremely quickly these days.
Agreed... Many many more people are moving to pc gaming; i for one :)
you have a point but why would the people moving from console gaming want another console like device. the whole concept seems pretty pointless to me honestly.
I agree. If you want to switch from a console to PC, you might as well just buy a gaming PC rather than this. Don't get me wrong it looks really nice but I don't see a huge bunch of people switching over to the Steam console, it'll just be another device people use time to time.
