App Store sales topped $10 billion across 2013

The App Store made $10 billion in sales last year, with December alone providing over $1 billion and a record-breaking amount of app downloads. iOS users racked up "almost" 3 billion downloads last month, helping to take App Store developers' earnings to date up to a whopping $15 billion.

Given that earnings figure was around the $7 billion mark at the end of 2012, that would suggest Apple Senior VP Eddy Cue isn't exaggerating when he calls 2013 "the best year ever for the App Store." As for what kind of apps are taking the most advantage of that success, it's games, games, and more games.

As we learned last month, Candy Crush Saga was the most downloaded free app of 2013, while Minecraft: Pocket Edition was the year's best-selling paid app. Revealingly, Candy Crush Saga was the sweetest of all for gross revenue, with Minecraft: Pocket Edition down (relatively) in 11th.

because you can get it all for free


I only buy songs if I really like the artist and want to support them. I've got 1285 songs and I've only bought 20.


In all honesty, I only buy songs is if I can't find one for free that has the album and cover art for the songs, get desperate and buy the album. Bugs me if I don't have the cover art for music


You can manually add cover art in iTunes.. Sort by album, right click, and click INFO. And add album art....

I think I only bought like $5 worth of apps since I've had an iPhone which has been about 4 years. I don't really get a lot of apps even if they're free.

I know, there's a game called Infinity Blade it's like $3, not worth it.


There is this game called Angry Birds Go and you can pay $50 to by a really good car.

I'm guessing that a lot of that revenue also came from in-app purchases. I'm steering clear of anything candy crush, but I'm pretty sure it's big on those. Of course this is just another money bath for Wozniak to take.
