Microsoft explored 75 Xbox One prototypes

Microsoft's senior industrial design manager Carl Ledbetter revealed that the company examined more than 75 sketched and 3D-printed prototype Xbox One designs before settling on the console's final look.

The Xbox One's Kinect sensor additionally saw more than 100 drafted designs before Microsoft decided on a physical shape for the console's camera peripheral. The Xbox One's controller was even more painstakingly crafted, requiring designers to draft more than 200 potential gamepad designs during development.

"We were extremely thorough," Ledbetter said, speaking for a Microsoft-published profile feature. "We were trying to push boundaries, to do something new and inventive, but there was so much at stake that we had to be really careful as well. The reason why there was so much at stake is that people really, really care about Xbox."

Microsoft definately played it safe with the design. They didn't risk a fancier design which could be hit or miss.

I may sound fanboyish saying this but I couldn't force my self to buy a PS4 when you tell the people who follow the crowd they say in a Kiddy voice " ZOMG XB1 SUX PS4 DA STUFF HA FANBOY THE KINECT SPIES ON U HAHA. I ENJOY HAVING SEX ON MY PS4." Will people please be logical PS4 was going to have DRM But XBOX doesn't wait for the other company to say it and wait for a response. Why was Watch Dogs delayed. Because PS4 in the middle of an E3 Conference went nope no DRM Then the community was like WE LOVE YOU SONY SCREW YOU XBOX! I think I could go on Fanboys need to be educated.

Sticking to the topic love the controller and kinect could do w/o the 3 red dots though. Wish the design was slimmer. Even though once the XBOX sits there its sets there quiety w/o a blue line
