New Apple TV rumoured to support games

Unnamed sources claim forthcoming box will support wider range of services

A new 2014 iteration of the Apple TV will be capable of acting as a game console, according to rumours.

The unnamed sources have told 9to5mac.com that the new Apple TV will boast an App-based platform similar to iOS devices.

As a result, the Apple TV will be capable of running all manner of applications - including games.

Meanwhile, iLounge has been informed by unnamed but 'reliable industry sources' that Apple is developing Bluetooth controllers for the Apple TV. The sources say the platform's new App support will be backwards compatible.

The 9to5mac.com report also claims the Apple TV will continue to be a set top box, and is expected to release in the first half of 2014.

Apple acquired PrimeSense last year, the company responsible for the motion technology which Kinect is based on. The move prompted rumours that Apple is developing its own Smart TV.

Apple chief executive Tim Cook said last December that the company is planning to strengthen its position in the TV space.

"When I go into my living room and turn on the TV, I feel like I have gone backwards in time by 20 to 30 years," he said.

Not a fan of apple TV, plus it would be a waste for something like this when consoles dominate the living room. No one would use this

LOL. Why play that when we use TVs for consoles? You must be really bored to use that, let alone buy it.

Zoidberg Knowing Apple, this TV will probably cost an arm and a leg.

The Apple TV only costs $99, pretty cheap. If they raise the price, which I'm not sure they will it will be $200 most likely.

I don't think they'd raise it a whole $100. Maybe $50 or so.

If it truly has gaming capabilities, I don't doubt it. Remember it's Apple they overcharge for all their products.

This is true, however all companies overcharge all of their products for profit haha.

Yeah but Apple takes it to an extreme, they charge $100 to upgrade flash storage on iPads and iPhones (flash storage is pretty cheap). Also the iPad hardware is nowhere near $500 worth.

No one is going to play them, I guarantee it. The games won't even be fun anyway.

I wouldn't personally like it, and i expect the price would be through the roof.
