Top phone makers plan to add "kill switch" programs by 2015

4.5
Apple, Microsoft, Google, Samsung, Nokia, HTC, Motorola, Huawei, and Asurion all have pledged to offer a free anti-theft tool for devices they make after July 2015; the effort is also being supported by wireless carriers AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile while Blackberry and LG are not involved. This feature would mean that when a consumer has their device stolen or loses it will be able to log on from a computer to remotely wipe and render their former device inoperable.

How do you feel about being guaranteed this option for your future mobile devices?

Justin01 Oh great so if you think about this your carrier will have this "kill switch" so if you don't pay your bill they will wipe your phone no data or service :/

I like how you get two people to reply to your comment believing you that they will do this. Smh, once can someone just say "you know this is a good feature" instead of making this into some type of backlash or surveillance from a company.

-Tupac It's a good idea, but will be so hard to pull off.

I would have to agree with what you said.. But from the mistakes and bugs there comes updates to fix them :)

It's nothing like that. However, they can if they want to either way. It's more user controlled. Meaning that they leave it up to you on the most case. The only way they would be allowed to do that is by you signing a contract that allows them to 'kill' your phone any moment they feel necessary. Just read your contracts thoroughly and it won't happen to you. Also another reason to keep a good back up of your phone.

I for one think this is a good idea and it will need some tweaks before it's ready, I bet.

conmaster550 I have a feeling that someone will eventually find out a way to hack it so that you can "kill" someones phone, sorta like a virus...

I never thought of that, that sounds horrible.

Kill switches can go both ways, its good for the consumer if they have delicate work on there phone that they can't expose but it also is bad because a virus/hacker could always activate the kill switch.
