YouTube: PewDiePie earns over $4 million each year

If you're contemplating a career change, you may want to look into playing video games and shouting into a camera, as doing just that has made Felix Kjellberg a millionaire.

Better known by his phonetically troublesome online handle "PewDiePie," Kjellberg has turned online video game streaming into a massively lucrative venture. According to the Wall Street Journal, the PewDiePie brand now attracts more than $4 million each year in ad revenue, thanks to the 27 million subscribers who follow Kjellberg's YouTube channel, where the 24-year-old frequently uploads videos of himself playing (and swearing at) various games.

Kjellberg attributes his success not to dumb luck or having capitalized on the streaming games trend at the exact right moment, but to a more personal touch that comes through in his videos. "Unlike many professionally produced shows, I think I've established a much closer contact with my viewers, breaking the wall between the viewer and what's behind the screen," he told the Wall Street Journal. "What I and other YouTubers do is a very different thing, it's almost like hanging around and watching your pal play games."

and how many of those subs are "active"? probably not even close to 10m. just because you have 27 million subs doesn't mean it's accurate.

Whilst I find that PewDiePie can get on your nerves at times... He isn't too bad. He is an entertaining person to watch however, the fanbase that comes along with him is what drives me mad; people spamming "brofist" or whatever into chat is incredibly annoying.

I wouldn't have thought that his YouTube career earnt him anywhere nere $4 million, I would've guessed about $250,000 at best. I guess you have to consider EVERY video that he can generate money for, along with any merch that he sells.

Maggardo If you divide 4 million up with 365, it would be 10958.90. Meaning on average, in a day he makes almost 11 thousand dollars daily. That's a huge amount of money, especially for just putting videos up on the internet.

I agree, but obviously we are the difference. Because, he's the most subscribed on YouTube and therefore makes the most money from it. Good for him.

That's a huge amount of money. I wasn't expecting him to make anywhere near that amount, I wouldn't have even thought he was making anywhere near 1 million, but he's making 4 million. That's crazy.
