"Yeah, we talked about that around the studio a lot," Condrey admitted, reflecting that hardware transitions are always "super-exciting, because you see the potential of the new hardware platform, what it can enable. And you know that you're going into a period where you have to figure out the how. How do I do all these cool new things? And you have the excitement of the R&D process."
Condrey and the studio's general manager Glen Schofield have experienced "seven or eight" platform transitions in their careers. First year titles create "unique challenges", he went on, but Activision's giving Sledgehammer an extra year to develop the latest Call of Duty has been enormously beneficial.
"The fact that we've had three years to develop our new tech, three years to learn the console has been really exciting. So we're still optimising, but what I can tell you is that we're definitely ahead of where the franchise was last year."
It's claimed that Xbox One's June software development kit update will allow for "tangible and impactful" benefits in terms of resolution, frame rate and other aspects of the experience. Next time I encounter Condrey, I'll ask him for his thoughts on that.
