Xbox One adds trial game downloads

Xbox One now supports trial game downloads, letting players try a limited portion of a game then pay to unlock the rest.

ID@Xbox director Chris Charla told Eurogamer that the system's online store previously supported demos and full games. It didn't support trial downloads, which bridge the gap on Xbox 360 by letting players skip downloading the game all over again if they decide to purchase the title.

"But now we do," Charla said. "In the same way that we update the Xbox One OS every month, they update the development system every month - or regularly, anyway. So that's something that we recently turned on. I don't think we've seen any ID@Xbox games yet that have shipped with trials, but we may well in the future. It's something that's open to everybody."

Charla added that Microsoft is considering adding new filtering options to the Xbox One store to make it easier to find ID@Xbox titles. Games will remain unsegregated based on their developers or budgets, but the company may add more ways on top of the standard experience to find them.

"We have had a lot of player requests for some way to specifically find the ID@Xbox games, so we have talked about adding some functionality so that people can do a search for just the ID@Xbox games," Charla said.

On Wednesday an Xbox executive reportedly said that Microsoft had dropped plans to let Xbox One systems double as dev kits - as part of a plan to promote wider development for the system - though a Microsoft spokesperson later said the comments "were inaccurate."

Game trails are really good but mostly I just get demos as most of the time if I get a demo or a trial, I won't end up buying the game. It is a really good marketing technique, because I am sure they sell the game once you get to a cliffhanger and then it says to continue you need to buy the game, gets a lot of people to buy the game.

Im glad they did this, I hate buying games that I can't play first like Thief. That was a big let down to me.

I would have to agree as I don't always have money laying around to buy these games.


Agreed, and plus if you're on the edge on whether or not you want to drop $60 on a game, now you can decide with a sneak peak.

Not on the XB1. It really is surprising how many steps back were taken on the new consoles.


It really is. I respect how MS (don't know about Sony) is letting the consumers shape the XB1, but MS knows what everyone liked from the 360. They could have put obvious things on the Xbox to begin with, like managing storage, support for USBs and keyboards, trials, and I'm still waiting for private chat.

YES its new. Its not the same trials your thinking about. Its not "Demos" its trials. Trials of the real game. Like if you were to buy it brand new in the store and play. You only get a curtain amount of time to play it though. But yes its new, Jeez. So no its not completely worthless.
