Xbox One adds trial game downloads

4.6
Xbox One now supports trial game downloads, letting players try a limited portion of a game then pay to unlock the rest.

ID@Xbox director Chris Charla told Eurogamer that the system's online store previously supported demos and full games. It didn't support trial downloads, which bridge the gap on Xbox 360 by letting players skip downloading the game all over again if they decide to purchase the title.

"But now we do," Charla said. "In the same way that we update the Xbox One OS every month, they update the development system every month - or regularly, anyway. So that's something that we recently turned on. I don't think we've seen any ID@Xbox games yet that have shipped with trials, but we may well in the future. It's something that's open to everybody."

Charla added that Microsoft is considering adding new filtering options to the Xbox One store to make it easier to find ID@Xbox titles. Games will remain unsegregated based on their developers or budgets, but the company may add more ways on top of the standard experience to find them.

"We have had a lot of player requests for some way to specifically find the ID@Xbox games, so we have talked about adding some functionality so that people can do a search for just the ID@Xbox games," Charla said.

On Wednesday an Xbox executive reportedly said that Microsoft had dropped plans to let Xbox One systems double as dev kits - as part of a plan to promote wider development for the system - though a Microsoft spokesperson later said the comments "were inaccurate."

I can see this being something cool at first, but really its just like the indie games they have on xbox. You play them for a bit for free and then you purchase it. Now they are doing it with real games. It seems they are running out ideas you know.

It would be useful if they added new filtering options because games can be difficult to find.

I'm glad they've added trials but I bet it's just for a few games.

I thought they already had trials.
Why can't they just let you download the trials space.
Ie. 1GB instead of 8GBish hmmm

This is cool, but also a full game size is a bit crazy for just a trial. But still a cool idea if you really wanted to try a game before you spend some money on it.

SO this is exactly the same as demos, except you HAVE to download the full game worth of space. i.e. 6GB+

These will probably be the exact same as the demo :/

DeluxeHazard I never knew that the Xbox One never had trial games. That must have sucked if you were hesitant on buying a game.

yea that's why they have demos and trials to try and suck you in to buy the game

Whey Trials are a good thing as you can experience a game, but usually trials seem way too short to enjoy. But that's the idea, so you purchase the full game.

yea i agree i hope they give us like a 1 hour trial for every game
