'Framerate is significantly more important than resolution,' says MS

Achieving a smooth frame rate in a game is more critical to gameplay than a 1080p native resolution, argues Xbox boss Phil Spencer.

This was the Microsoft exec's response on Wednesday when questioned by CVG on the firm's efforts to close the often discussed performance gap between PS4 and Xbox One.

"We have done a lot of work with our partners and we constantly evolve our development tools," Spencer said in an interview with CVG.

"We announced that Destiny will have the same resolution and frame rate on Xbox One as PS4. There are a long list of games. Reaching parity with our partners has been important."

He went on: "But in the end I don't want it to be about a number, because 1080p isn't some mythical, perfect resolution. Frame rate to me is significantly more important to gameplay than resolution and the mix of those two which brings the right art style and freedom, whether it's on PlayStation or our platform."

Spencer highlighted Sony's unique decision to render PS4 exclusive The Order 1886 at the cinematic 1920x800 resolution (the same pixel density as 1080p but with black movie-style bars at the top and bottom).

"I look at games like The Order on Sony's platform and they picked a different resolution - I like the resolution that they picked, I think it's interesting," said Spencer.

"I want to put the tools in the hands of the artists and not try to math it that there's some sort of [mathematical] answer for what the right resolution and frame rate is for a game - because there isn't.

"Clearly some genres like with racing sims like Forza, hitting 1080p/60fps is important. So there are certain genres where there's an expectation, but there are also other genres where I'd rather use the cycles to put more effects on screen or better lighting. I've got to put the tools in the hands of developers," he added.

Spencer also debated how interested gamers are in the performance gap between the two consoles is at this point.

"That's the first time I've been asked that question in months, and I always take how many times I get asked something as to how interesting it is to your readers," he commented.

Honestly I don't mind 30fps if my settings are on ultra, It would be better for xbox to allow users to adjust their graphic settings so they can decide what they want, but I highly doubt they would ever allow that just because they don't want to risk users going over what the console can handle then complaining.

Now this a guy I like, I have always said that I don't care about 1080p just make it 720p 60fps and I will be happy I can't stand gta 5 because of that reason 60fps is a must for me.

DeluxeHazard I agree with this. I would rather have a smooth 360p game than a laggy 720p game.

It is a next gen console. They should not be having problems with this in the first place. Users bought it in hopes it could handle games at 1080p without framerate latency issues as they were promised.

Well, I for one bought it because i want to play games with friends and have fun. Thats walso why i still play my xbox 360 and ps4 still.Hell give a console with the graphical power of a toaster, i dont care as long as i'm having fun.

CrysisAndy I just think its crap that these consoles are "Next-Gen" yet can't push enough power to have 1080p 60fps games with amazing textures, shadows, lighting, etc. For just coming out, my xbox one shouldn't have frame rate drops in the middle of a game on battlefield 4, which is a day one game. Poor job on Microsoft. My laptop can handle games better.

Well, they can -- just not for the price they are now. The thing here is the pricing, people moan about the One being $500, yet complain about next-gen not being comparable to a $1000 custom built rig. Both MS and Sony are barely making anything per console sold, so cramming any higher end hardware into them would either make them take a loss on each console they sell, or drive the price up even higher -- which you know people will just moan about even more. You cant have the best of both worlds, so don't complain about next-gen consoles not having high-end PC hardware in them, when they sell at the price of a Walmart PC.

And FYI: It's not a "bad job" on Microsoft, PS4 can run a few more games at 1080p, but not @ 60FPS, or with "amazing textures, shadows and lighting"

Don't forget that both companies aren't selling the consoles for a loss anymore so us console peasant's are literally getting what we paid for (plus cheap asian labor).

You're paying 400 bucks for an all in one console, it doesn't only play games but the PS4 and Xbox One both have other entertaining things you can do on them. You can cut off your cable and just use your gaming consoles. If you want those picture perfect graphics then buy a PC.

people are such nitpickers. 720 P vs 1080 P, WHO GIVES A FLYING **** ? You will barely notice a difference unless sit right in front of your TV. If you really care about frame rate and resolution quit bitching and buy a PS4 no one is stopping you.

Kex well Ill agree with them but resolution is still a thing you'll need.

Resolution isn't as vital as framerate is concerned.
