Players have been reporting that their once-powerful rare weapons are significantly less impressive after downloading the Destiny 1.03 update which went live on Tuesday.
Bungie took to Twitter to tell players that it had intended to retune some weapons to balance the game, but that some of the changes were not planned.
"If you're noticing Exotics behaving differently, the changes are unintentional," it said. "The Weekly Update will cover incoming Exotic tuning."
The studio also set up a thread on the official Bungie forum to collect feedback on changes to exotics so it could investigate and look into a fix.
The thread has since seen numerous reports from players complaining about different exotics being nerfed.
"Bad Juju mag not refilling after kill," complained one user, adding: "Thorn feels like a pop gun, almost wastes a whole mag on one enemy. Invective has extreme short range, far less than other shotguns."
Another added: "Icebreaker was doing less damage to Aetheon. So was Vision of Confluence. These were during Times Vengeance with full critical hits being scored. It was kinda horrible, especially since we were fighting in frame rate soup."
The incident has caused some more cynical players to suggest this was a deliberate move in preparation for the return of the Iron Banner event, which will launch again on November 19.
The studio had previously promised that the next Iron Banner would place more of an emphasis on players' power, leading some to suggest the exotic weapons were nerfed to avoid unfair advantages.
However, Bungie denies this and claims these changes were an unintentional by-product of the new update.
