Microsoft to reveal its plans for 'gaming on Windows' in January

Xbox head Phil Spencer will make an appearance at a special Windows 10 event in January to discuss the company's plans for Windows gaming.

The event, taking place at the firm's Redmond HQ on January 21, will see several Microsoft bigwigs offer an insight into the next major iteration of its operating system - and gaming will be a part of that conversation.

"I'll be focusing more on what we are doing on Win10 in January," commented Spencer via Twitter.

"It's time for us to talk about gaming on Windows," he added.

According to an official announcement on the event, Spencer will join a panel of execs who will "talk about the Windows 10 consumer experience".

Microsoft's Xbox business has enjoyed a successful end to 2014, with Xbox One being the best-selling console in both the US and the UK in November.

This represents a welcome turnaround for Microsoft in the US. According to retail monitor NPD Group, PS4 outsold Xbox One in each of the first ten months of 2014. Prior to November 2014, Xbox One's last monthly sales victory in the US came in December 2013.

the layout actually looks so sick.

The main reason the PS4 outsold the XB1 in the first 10 months was because of the stupid "always online" feature Microsoft initially announced.

I'm assuming 'Gaming with Windows' isn't limited to a simple program or whatever. Since so many pc gamers (almost all, lol) play on Windows OS, it makes sense that they configure the OS itself to better suit these needs. Less of the stuff that these slightly more advanced techies won't need so the computer operates more efficiently at doing what they want to do with it.

-Skittle It does seem a bit weird, skipping windows 9, and making a new platform when we already have many existing gaming networks like steam.

I agree that skipping 9 seems weird, but it seems to be a marketing technique. As for the "new platform" you mentioned, in the article, there is no mention of windows 10 challenging steam. Also, as every PC gamer knows, you need windows to play majority of the games. Gaming on Windows 10 will probably be better compatibility, a gaming mode, and some other minor stuff.
