Nintendo is working on its next console, says Miyamoto

Nintendo's internal teams are hard at work on Nintendo's next games console, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has said.

In an interview with AP, the designer said that while the firm remains very much committed to developing games for Wii U, it also has teams working up idea for the company's next major hardware offering.

"We're focused on providing a robust line-up of Wii U software for next year. It seems like we've managed to do that this year and people are very happy with what we've done on Wii U," he said.

"For the time being, our focus is on the Wii U hardware, but Nintendo as a whole has groups working on ideas for new hardware systems. While we're busy working on software for the Wii U, we have production lines that are working on ideas for what the next system might be," he went on to confirm.

This doesn't come as a surprise since it's typical for platform holders to begin work on their next machine soon after their last hardware launch, but this does come a the first official acknowledgment of Nintendo's work on a new console.

Miyamoto also spoke briefly of the key role Mario typically plays in showing off the evolution of Nintendo's new hardware. "With each digital evolution, he was there to usher in the next era. I think that maybe when we release the next hardware system, you can look forward to seeing Mario take on a new role or in a new game," he said.

Nintendo highlighted encouraging Wii U sales growth in October as it posted improved financial results for the first half of its business year.

The company said Wii U sales have been on an upward curve since Mario Kart 8's release in May. Nintendo sold 610,000 Wii U consoles in its most recent quarter, for a total of 1.12 million in the April-September period, taking lifetime Wii U sales to 7.29 million units since launching in November 2012.

-LoneWolf The Wii was big for kids or basic party house holds lol. Anymore the add-on's to it are worth more than the console itself.

The Wii was big for so much more than that...
You have such an ignorant perspective and you're spewing it out like it's fact.

Meh the wii was kinda shit tbh, it had no hd support while all the consoles of that generation did, it hardly had any processing power comparable to other systems which resulted in very few game ports, and the ports we did get weren't the same game we got to experience on xbox / playstation they were watered down graphically and in terms of features as well usually, so yea.

I can already picture myself playing a new version of Super Smash on this new console.

I love Nintendo, but they should make something that can compete against PS4/XB1

Really stimulated that Nintendo is working on the next gen console. Hopefully Nintendo learned from their recent mistakes and makes a kick ass console with actual must own exclusive launch titles. Another thing is making the console powerful enough so that it can last 10 years like the Xbox 360 and the PS3. Please Nintendo entice 3rd party developers to bring their games to your new next gen console because I don't want it to be left out again like the Wii and Wii U.
