Steam lets modders sell their wares, starting with 'Skyrim'

4.6
Valve's move to start selling community-created mods on its PC-game storefront looks like it could boost that $57 million user payout from earlier this year. And it's starting with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- one of the most popular moddable games. The process sounds pretty easy as Valve tells it, too. Upload your tweak to the Skyrim Creation Kit, agree to the new Steam Workshop terms, enter payment info and set your creation free. Within the week, it'll go up for sale at a price of your choosing. You can even add revenue splitting if you're working with a team and generally control the whole process from start to finish.

The beginning of the end of PC gaming. Don't know what Valve and Bethesda were thinking when they put this in.

I really think this is a bad idea and it will be removed

My only issue with this is mods sometimes have glaring bugs and can not be compatible with other mods you have already purchased/installed. It would be extremely annoying to buy a mod just to find out it doesn't play nice with something you already have. I'd be 100% on board with this if there was complete compatibility across the board with mods but I don't think that's a possibility.

Someone at Valve is REALLY thinking silencing us will make the hate go away.

This is already a massive debate over on Reddit. There are massive top rated mods on the Nexus thinking about dropping support for the nexus version and only updating the paid workshop versions.

Bad idea they will get rid of it

it is pretty cool that people that make mods can now get paid for it, most of the people that make small add ons put them up for only a few pence but then you have these other trolls that put nothing on the mod but list it for £50. Hopefully mod or staff members will deal with this

good god my steam account has 0 games im wanting gmod but ill earn my money

bmadden I don't see this as a massive issue.
But it is a stupid idea. Oh well, back to the Nexus I go

It actually is a big deal. Especially when Valve takes 75% of the profit. That leaves barley any money for the creator. Go back to nexus? Haha! Nice one! Too bad nexus mod creators are taking their mods down and moving them to Steam to make a quick buck. This a terrible idea. There's already torrents of the mods for purchase. This isn't good at all...
