Twitter drops 140 character limitation for Direct Messages

4.7
It has been almost a decade since the inception of Twitter and over the course of nine years, a lot has changed. Although the core functionality of Twitter still remains, Twitter has added many new features to remain competitive and broaden its user base. Today, Twitter has announced that it will be dropping the 140 character limitation in 'Direct Messages'.

For those unfamiliar, Twitter has had a character limitation of 140 characters for both public tweets and 'Direct Messages'. The difference between the two is that tweets are public, while the 'Direct Messages' are private and can only be seen by whom its directed to. By lifting the 140 character limitation in Direct Messages, private conversations will be able to be conducted much simpler, especially true when involved in group Direct Messaging.

The update will begin rolling out today on Twitter.com, Android and iOS. TweetDeck and Twitter for Mac will also be updated to support the new feature. Twitter did not mention whether an update would be available for Windows Phone.

The character limitation is fine for public tweets but for direct messages there should have never been a character limit.
