Phil Spencer Says Catching PS4 Sales Isn’t His Priority

4.7
Since the Xbox One and the PS4 launched, Sony has held the upper hand when it comes to sales of units in a very big way. This year, the Xbox One has made some serious inroads when it comes to catching Sony and the Playstation 4 and making this a real contest. The company has come up with ideas like backwards compatibility that Sony hasn’t even offered yet. It was also the first to launch a console with a larger hard drive in order to make it easier for players with large downloadable games libraries.

Despite all of this Phil Spencer says his primary goal isn’t to “catch” Sony. Instead the Xbox One chief’s primary mission is just to make sure his console has a strong standing and is well received. He believes the rest will take care of itself. Talking to the Eurogamer, he laid out how he sees where his product stands now. “All I can do is focus on Xbox, and I love that. I love our fans and the partners we have. We’re growing Xbox year on year, we’re bigger than we were this time in the 360 generation, so generation over generation we’re in a better spot, year over year we’re in a better spot.”

Spencer went onto claim that he really doesn’t even think about how many units Sony has sold. While that might seem an awful lot like someone would say no matter who they were and where they were in the market share, it’s still a healthy approach. You don’t want execs always being reactive with their product to what their competitors are doing. Instead, they should be looking to innovate on their own. Phil Spencer seems to share that belief publicly.

Xbox will definitely become the more dominant console in the future. Better games, better sales, better connection. The playstation servers go down a lot compared to the XBL servers.

Saying five of your friends switched from Playstation to Xbox doesn't prove that Xbox sells more than Playstation now. Your five friends are a fraction of a percentage of people who own a PS4 or an Xbox One.

Lig I don't why people buy ps4 over xb1, the xb1 has so many more features

Most people grew up on playstations. We grew on PS1 and PS2 best consoles ever. Xbox is relatively new compared to PS.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. PS4 was 100$ cheaper and an all around better console when both consoles released back in 2013. PS+ is 10$ cheaper per year than XBL plus has historically offered better free games to their members. When the Xbone was first announced, it was an always online, DRM, glorified TV box made to be an all purpose media piece. No gamer wants a console that is more made for TV than games. Then there was the whole problem with how games would work; basically, once you buy the game and register it to your Xbone, nobody else could play it without the consent of both parties, both xboxs, and Microsoft. Literally made used games nonexistent.

Finally, the worst thing that could happen. NSA was still hot topic on spying and guess what, the Kinect 2.0 is ALWAYS on. The camera and microphone were always on. If you blocked the camera, your Xbone wouldn't work.
After all these "innovations" by Microsoft, their PR said FU to anyone who wanted to play offline and that they should just keep their 360s.

Tooooons of backpedalling later and nearly two years later, we now have an Xbone worthy of competing against a PS4 that hasn't improved drastically during that same time window because it doesn't really need to. Xbox shot themselves in the foot and didn't even show up for the race in the beginning because they only came out in select markets (US and only like 5 Europe countries). Literally, there was no reason to buy an Xbone the past 2 years and still isn't one unless Halo 5 is worth the price of a whole new console.

You're wrong, for one you don't need a kinect anyways yet alone for it to be on all the time, plus you have nothing to worry about if you aren't breaking any laws and welcome to post 9/11 america where everyone is watched because we live in crazy times now where no where is safe. Plus Playstation may be cheaper in the long run but their online service is a joke and they never make any significant changes when it comes to updates, and they also still refuse to do backwards compatibility which they are capable of they just don't want to.

Their sales are coming from being cheaper because a lot of people cant afford to upgrade and still complain about it when after two years of saving you'd figure anybody could have enough saved up for either one of the consoles...
