Fallout 4 is going to have a season pass worth of DLC, Bethesda announced recently.
DLC is still a hot topic of debate and the news has not gone down well with everyone. Replying to a scathing comment on Twitter, Bethesda marketing boss Pete Hines defended the scheme.
“I think letting folks know our thoughts on it and how it fits into our post-launch plans is a good approach,” he said.
Certainly honesty and openness is something that’s proving more and more valuable in games marketing. In this particular instance, Bethesda has said it doesn’t even know what the DLC will be, which may help calm all the usual worries of resources being diverted from core development or features cut in order to be sold off separately.
One of the arguments in favour of DLC is that when managed efficiently it reduces the need for regular firing cycles – tams transition onto new content as and when they finish with existing projects. Since the core Bethesda team only has one game on the go at a time, that’s probably quite important. Bethesda’s track history with DLC – horse armour aside! – is worth considering, too.
Fallout 4 launches on PC, PS4 and Xbox One on November 10.
