Sony Charging For PS2 Emulation On PS4 Makes Sense – Developer

4.6
Though it’s still pretty early, Sony has a very interesting opportunity with its PlayStation 2 emulator for the PS4. With the abnormally large catalogue of PS2 releases, some considered classics despite their age, the emulator could be a great compliment to services like PlayStation Now. The question is – should Sony really be charging money for these old PS2 games?

GamingBolt spoke to Norwind Interactive’s Brandyn Engbrecht, who is currently working on the sandbox title Astraea for the PS4, about his take on PS2 emulation and whether it would be a success even with Sony charging money for digital PS2 games.

He stated that, “I am thrilled that the PS4 will be able to emulate PS2 games! I believe that the more games on a platform, the better. I’m sure Sony had to pay it’s developers to make the emulation software work – so charging money only makes sense. I hope it’s a success!”

Though comparisons could be made to the Xbox 360 emulator on Xbox One, it’s hard to really draw parallels since the former is one generation behind while the PS2 is two generations behind. Also, Microsoft is offering the opportunity for old Xbox 360 games to work on the Xbox One though it needs to build in support for said games with the help of developers.

Sony shouldn't be charging for this, people own the game and the console they should be allowed to play it for free

I dont see why they should charge for this... xbox didnt charge for their backwards compatibility

Whether or not it makes sense to the developer, ti is the end user's choice whether or not they deem it to be worth the cost.

lolohnoeszsz Honestly charging makes sense because the emulator isn't some simple thing that just runs the PS2 game and it's original assets/etc. Shit the games that are emulated on the PS4 run at a higher base resolution and higher frame rates than the PS2 versions. Not to mention the trophy support for the PS2 titles so there's that.

I mean what most of the games will be like anywhere from $10-$15? For what you get I think that sounds like a fair price.

Or you could just get it for FREE on PC which is just a fully working one without paying

I hope the prices don't become high.

SuperNerdgasm Shit if they really wanna charge for the emulation then just get a PS2. Then you can play all those titles.

You could but that means buying a PS2 and the game you want then you have the issue of no trophies, no increased resolutions, no increased frame rates, etc. Really buying them on the PS4 is a much MUCH better deal.

I hope this works with the Xbox one. I was mad when they made the Xbox one cause everyone switched and we couldn't play with each other anymore. For ps4 that's great because I love some ps2 games

TDMBucher I really hope they bring back ratchet and clank.

One of the biggest hits in Playstation history, I can't see them not bringing it back, they would be idiotic not to.
