Sony working on “PS4.5″ with an upgraded GPU and 4K support

4.5
Sony is working on a PlayStation 4 with the ability to run games at 4K resolution.

This is according to developers who told Kotaku at GDC a PS4 console with increased graphical power, dubbed “PlayStation 4.5″, was currently in the works.

It will purportedly have more processing power to support 4K and to better enhance the PlayStation VR game experience – all thanks to an upgraded GPU.

Various verified development sources spoke to more than one writer at Kotaku regarding “PS4.5″ and while some of the details were “vague”, once source said the console felt “exploratory” and may not arrive this year.

It was also rumored that Sony met with developers at GDC this week to discuss the console, and some developers where even overheard talking about PS4.5 on the show floor to one another.

When reached for comment, a Sony spokesperson told Kotaku it doesn’t comment on rumors and speculation.

At present, PS4 “outputs games at a max resolution of 1920×1080 pixels when playing games, whereas 4K outputs at 4096×2160 pixels,” explained Gematsu.

So while the current console doesn’t support 4K resolution, it does support 4K for videos and photos.

We’ll keep you up-to-date on this as more information becomes available.

Freshwaffle The current PS4 can barely handle 1080p 30fps, so I highly doubt they'll achieve a decent framerate at 4k res

How would it be any different than a gaming PC running 60FPS@4k? As long as Sony puts in a capable GPU in the 4.5 it wouldn't be any different than a PC with the same GPU outputting the same resolution. It being a console doesn't suddenly make it lesser, it's all about the hardware. Consoles are essentially PCs that use tailored hardware and proprietary operating systems.

Do you have any idea what it costs to run 4k res at a decent framerate? One of the biggest appeals to console gaming is the low entry price. You're right, there wouldn't be any major differences between a PC and the PS4.5. However, I just don't see Sony taking such a risk after seeing how ps3 lost to xbox due to pricing.

Potion Extremely doubtful. Consoles have never had major hardware upgrades/revisions in the same generation, so I am doubtful that Sony will do this.

sega 32x....its possible the ps4 and xb1 are way out of date for 2016 hardware wise having trouble with 1080p 60fps? 1080 was out in like 2003-2005.

I mean the PS4 is already nice but with 4K that would just be insane.

Zexsou If they're planning on trying to get 4k on a console, the price may jump from the general consumer's comfort level.

Well the PS3 was $499-599 at launch depending on the model you got, and I'm sure if Sony really wanted to move units they could take a loss on the 4.5 and make money through accessories and games like the 360/PS3 did when they launched. It sounds really interesting, and with rumors of an upgraded One circulating around I could see this happening. I just don't know how devs will react to having to cater to a "lesser" version of one console vs the other. Then again, they had the same problem when it was 360 vs One or PS3 vs PS4.

$800 I believe

very doubtful that this is going to happen.

Can't see it happening anytime soon, however, it would be insane if they could achieve it.
