Quantum Break dev responds to fan uproar over 720p resolution

Quantum Break’s developer Remedy explains its approach to the game’s final resolution.

Recent analysis of Remedy’s Quantum Break revealed a 720p resolution output for the Xbox One version. Although the game’s use of anti aliasing and other graphical effects is impressive, the relatively low resolution left a few Xbox One owners upset.

With all signs pointing towards this also being the case for the final code, due for release next month, Remedy has issued a statement to try and explain the complex process the studio went through during development, and how it ended up with this resolution.

“Quantum Break’s 1080p output is a temporal reconstruction from four previous 720p 4xMSAA frames,” the developer told Inquisitr.

“This approach gets us high pixel quality in combination with complex shading and effects, allowing us to achieve a cinematic look. However, varying sample counts between passes and temporal upscaling makes talking about resolution, as it is traditionally understood, complicated in the case of Quantum Break.

“Since the start of “Quantum Break’s” development, the most important thing for Remedy and Microsoft has been delivering a compelling gaming experience with superior artistic quality. This is what Remedy is renowned for. We’re confident that we have achieved this, and can’t wait to hear what fans think on April 5 when they play the game.”

Quantum Break is out April 5 on Windows 10, and Xbox One.

I personally can hardly tell the difference between 720p and 1080p so whats the big deal?

ValorPosted:

Lol you won't even notice a difference from 1080p to 720p people are just freaking out

MickersPosted:

Personally really do not mind it's only 720...

Lmao these consoles are so weak it's sad.

A common response to situations like this is "I don't care as long as the gameplay is good" but I highly doubt the majority of you guys would be perfectly content with an ugly graphically unpleasing game. No matter how you look at it graphics do matter to an extent, and they should at least be considered in determining a games worth. Now judging a game entirely on graphics is kind of dumb, but they should be up to what people would consider as standard.

MDA I don't really care as long as the game is still brilliant because I'm really looking forward to this.

who cares lol if i liked a game so much i would consider 244p lmao

platyui Don't get why people only look at resolution when it comes to graphics. There's so much more to graphics than that it than that.

Because every anti-console nerd on the internet brings up resolution when comparing console to PC so people think resolution is everything.

Ah. So people that just so happen to enjoy games on a different platform are nerds, while you aren't? Sounds like a console player to me. Resolution is brought up, because 1080p should be a minimum that consoles can handle easily. However, you are being sold a "next gen" console that can BARELY handle 1080p at a consistent 60 fps.

These things matter, because graphics are just as important as game play. Consoles are ragged on, because for a little more you could build a system that can push games at 1080p 60+ fps without sweating. Console players are being undersold. That is the main point. I play on both and the differences are way noticeable.

You can play a different platform without being anti-console. There's a difference between preferring PC over console and saying console is shit just because you play PC. It's not as black and white as you make it seem either, you cant just stuff in a new GPU to give it better performance. Both consoles run off of custom AMD APUs, an upgrade would require working with AMD to build an APU way stronger than anything on the market right now or getting a dedicated GPU and creating a whole new look for the consoles to accommodate it. As for your "next-gen" comment, yes it is next generation. Going from 7th generation to 8th generation would make it next-generation, so I'm not sure what you're on about. It's not like "next-gen" is only reserved for things that are leaps and bounds better than it's predecessor (when really, 360 to Xbone was a huge improvement in performance in itself).

At the end of the day, consoles are whatever MS/Sony make of them. They could handle 4k@60FPS and come with their own dedicated VR headsets but would cost $1000+. There is no "consoles should hit 1080p easily" when it comes to low cost, user friendly couch gaming. It's more like "for $350, this is what you get" and that's a modest $350 considering you get a controller and headset to go with it. Every little bit adds up, especially at a price that low. You need to think about the niche with consoles and the demographic they're targeted toward. Just because YOU have $500 to spend on a GPU for top of the line graphical fidelity doesn't mean other people have that kind of money to spend. I don't understand the logic of taking the piss out of people who play on console. That'd be like some guy in a Ferrari making fun of someone else in a Toyota corolla. YOU spent more money than the other guy, fantastic. That doesn't mean you talk down to everyone else who drives cheaper cars.

tl;dr dont be rude

AA is basically faking a resolution, they can't do better than 720p on a console? No surprise.

CraigPosted:

Seam As long as it doesn't take away from the gameplay experience much, who actually cares?

People who don't have the viewing abilities of Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles!!! 720p in 2016 on a game is utterly pathetic!
