Infinite Warfare Won’t Use A New Engine, But Will Feature Improvements

4.5
Call of Duty has been going on for so long, and for all that time, it has been using the exact same engine, only with little tweaks to keep it relevant every year. And yet, each year, there are those who doubtless hope that the series will upgrade its underlying tech- and what better time to do it than with the very first installment of the series that is being made exclusively for next generation machines?

And yet, Infinity Ward have confirmed that Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will not in fact have a new engine. It will be using the same engine as each year, but there will be improvements as always.

“In the last three years, we have made continual improvements to our tech,” explained Jacob Minkoff, the design director for the game, to AusGamers. “We have overhauled our animation engine, physics, AI system, NPC behaviors and more. We are doing a lot that has never been done in the series before, like seamless, streaming level transition, for instance, that allow us to go from ground combat to space and then inside our hub as a continual experience, so we needed to re-engineer our systems to deliver on that vision.

“We’re also using physically-based rendering, which means more detailed lighting and improved shading across the board. Surfaces in our game, from the hallway of a warship to the wrinkles on a character’s forehead will be seen more realistically and naturally than ever before. We’ve built a new performance capture stage too. Our tech really lets us bring the actors’ performances to life in a really cool way. We can’t wait for fans to play the game for themselves.”

So- I’m not entirely convinced that this substitutes having an entirely new engine. Then again, it doesn’t sound like this setup is lacking in any way, and this is definitely an engine that has worked just fine for the series, and one that the developers are probably comfortable with- so I guess there are reasons for Infinity Ward to stick with it.

agoon i only end up playing the CODs for about 3 months and get entirely bored from the same progression over and over again. the only thing that keeps me interested at this point is zombies on BO3. im not going to buy COD this year and to be honest theres no point as I STILL play BF4 even though its been out for 3 years. the immersion you get with it is nowhere close to COD's iphone like game progression. activision not putting the consumer first is going to be their bidding this year and we will see even already, the mistake they made.

I can understand you getting bored with the progression system but that system predates the iPhone in years.

TTG-Flashing the game is still gonna be garbage no matter what they say.

Swift Alright, I'll take your word for it. since you have obviously played the game and know it's garbage.

amen i am with swift on this one

The preorders show that the CoD fans who like the game are the minority this time. If the core fans wanted a futuristic game again it would be killing sales, but this time Battlefield listened and is dominating. This game's saving grace will be its inflated sales from packaging something fans actually want with it. That'll affect the sales of both games as well.

But realistically nobody can truly judge the game until they have played it hands on!

The people that complain "omg no new engine" clearly have no idea what they are talking about.

Just because everything isn't brand new doesnt mean it's not better. Apple didn't go from iPhone to iPhone to iPhone by making a completely new iteration each time. You people are seriously trying to say that the iPhone 7 is the same as the original iPhone?
If these idiots had any idea about a development cycle, they would shut up.

Oh, like the same as every cod before it. This was such news!
