When you connect your Xbox One console to a TV or monitor, the console defaults to video settings that are based on the settings of your TV or monitor. In some cases, you can change these settings to improve video quality.

Image appears fuzzy or unclear

Here's how to change the screen resolution, color depth, and color space settings for an HDTV or monitor that's connected to an Xbox One console by an HDMI cable.

Screen resolution

1. Go to the Home screen.
2. Press the Menu button on the controller.

Note The Xbox One console supports screen resolutions of 720p and 1080p.

Color depth

Color depth is how much color information per pixel is sent to the TV or monitor.

Note Color depth of 30 bits per pixel (bpp) or higher is known as "deep color." Not all HDTVs accept deep color information.

• TV (RGB limited) This is the optimal reference level. It should work for all displays.
  
• PC (RGB full) We recommend this option only if you're using a PC monitor on which colors are sub-optimal.
  

Image stutters or is slow to refresh

If the image on your TV or monitor is visibly slow to refresh, it may mean that your TV or monitor is stuck in a low refresh rate. If this happens, you'll need to restart your Xbox One console. Here's how:

1. On the console, press and hold the Xbox button until the light behind it turns off (about 5 seconds), which means the console is off.
2. Press the Xbox button to turn the console on again.

Also, check that your television is not performing additional processing on the image. On your TV, this is often called dynamic contrast, image enhancement, or clear motion rate. Running the HDTV calibration wizard can help you optimize settings for your television.

Troubleshooting video issues with an audio-video receiver in your setup

If your Xbox One console is connected to an audio-visual receiver (AVR), and the AVR is then connected to the television, and the image is slow or stutters, follow these troubleshooting steps:

1. Power on your devices in the following order, waiting for each device to fully power up before starting the next device:
a. First, power on your television.
b. Once your television is displaying a picture, power on the AVR.
c. Power on your Xbox One console.
2. Use the Input button on your televisions remote control (or the buttons on the television) to switch the input source of your AVR away from the console and then back (for example, switch from HDMI1 to HDMI2, then switch back to HDMI1).
3. Restart the AVR.
4. Set your TV connection to HDMI:
a. Press the Xbox button to return to the Home screen.
b. Press the Menu button on the controller.
