Overview - League of Legends is a fast-paced, competitive online game that blends the speed and intensity of an RTS with RPG elements. Two teams of powerful champions, each with a unique design and playstyle, battle head-to-head across multiple battlefields and game modes. With an ever-expanding roster of champions, frequent updates and a thriving tournament scene, League of Legends offers endless replayability for players of every skill level.

Beginners - Players may begin a game in two different ways, either versus bots or humans. By searching for a 'Normal Game' in the 'Solo' queue or in the 'Arranged Team' queue you will face five human opponents, while selecting 'Co-op vs. AI' you will be part of a human team versus AI bots. As a beginner, you will most likely be searching solo, but if you have friends on the game already, that will help you a lot by joining a knowledgeable team that can support you in your first games.

Laning Phase - There are three lanes on Summoners Rift, Middle lane, Top Lane, and of course Bottom Lane

"Laning" is a phrase commonly referring to the starting phase of the game. The laning phase consists of one to two members selecting a "lane" (the pre-scripted path where your AI controlled minions path) in order to maximize experience gain among the team. During the laning phase players usually focus on gaining gold and experience through creep kills and slaying enemy champions. The laning phase is considered over when the outer turret of either team is taken, as it becomes dangerous to venture ("push") farther into enemy territory. It is at this time that it is generally considered beneficial to meet up with the rest of your team and help take their outer turrets.
A champion role most of the time goes to a certain lane in which you will learn of them on the next section.
Usually,an AD carry goes bottom lane with his or her support. One AP Carry goes to middle lane. Assassin or Melee goes at the top of the lane. Your jungler is going to all over the jungle. Those blue and purple lines mean where your jungler is going to travel and the purple teams jungler is gonna travel. Sometimes your jungler and the enemy jungler are gonna duke it out in the jungle.

Champions - League has tons of champions to choose from and at times it can be overwhelming to a new player. Just take a deep breath. It's okay, you're not going to know how each champion works just yet. Good news is each champion is labeled i.e.; Melee, mage, support, assassin, tank, assassin, fighter and marksman. Read down below to learn what each of these mean.Keep in mind, each champions can be more than one.

- A marksman attacks from range, and primarily use their abilities to maintain safe positioning and provide additional firepower. Fighters can also at times be referred to as ADC which means Attack Damage Carry

- Assassins are able to eliminate an enemy Champion in an instant by pulling off a powerful combination of attacks and abilities.

- Fighters are champions that blend the attributes of a damager and tank, combining moderate to heavy survivability with the damage of an assassin or carry. These Just like any other champion they can get really strong if fed a lot.

- Mages are champions with powerful magic damage skills or support skills but low defense. Some are meant to deal a high amount of damage in a short period of time(burst casters/burst mages) while others usually deal damage over time. Like carry champions, they can bring their team to victory due to their ability power, but tend to fall off in the very late game.

- Supports are Champions that manipulate the battlefield through more subtle means than sheer damage output. Often in control of providing vision through wards and dictating map control.

- Tanks have the strongest defensive capabilities in the game. Their abilities usually focus on increasing these capabilities, as well as dealing damage which increases the longer they stay in the fight. They're often the first Champion to engage the enemy team in combat.

HITTING LEVEL 30
Level 30 is the highest level you can go on league of legends. By hitting level 30 you can finally get into rank, you unlock many more runes and you finally get 30 masteries. (to get in rank you need at least 16 champions)

Ranked - A ranked game is a draft mode game type available to level 30 summoners with at least 16 champions available (NOT including free week champions). Summoners are placed on a game ladder and ranked against one another according to a hidden Matchmaking Rating. Players are divided into Challenger, Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze tiers, with each tier further subdivided into 5 divisions, apart from Challenger, which only has one tier. Once gained, a tier cannot be lost except by four weeks of inactivity in the particular ranked mode (this applies only to tiers, and not divisions). Furthermore, inactivity may result in a change of league placement upon re-activation. Players who have not played their first 10 "placement" games will not be able to see their rating in their profile until the 10 are played, at which point they will be placed in a particular League, and corresponding Tier and Division. Ranked games are considered the competitive alternative to normal games.
Win ranked games and youll gain League Points (LP), while losing in ranked loses you LP. If youre already at the bottom of your division, this may mean dropping to the previous division. Each time you hit 100 LP within your division, you'll qualify for a promotion series best-of-three. Beat that and youll promote yourself to the next division. If you hit a promotion series when youre in division I, then you'll qualify for a larger promotion series best-of-five. Beat that series and youll move on to the next tier!

I am currently Gold V with 72 LP

Runes - Summoners are able to use a rune per level of power in League of Legends, and they keep their Runes in a tome called a Runebook. Before a match begins, a Summoner will be able to choose from up to twenty different rune configurations they have previously set in their Runebook. This allows the Summoner to have quick flexibility in choosing a Runebook configuration best suited for whatever champion they might use in any of Valoran's Fields of Justice.
In depth rune guide by KingStyleToast

Now every Summoner starts with two Rune pages and can play quite a wide selection of Champions very well with just these in all positions except Support. I will explain how in a moment. There are some Champions whose potential cannot be fully realized without having specifically tailored Rune pages and although you can play them without they just don't measure up as well. I recommend avoiding specifically tailored pages until you have been able to purchase multiple extra Rune pages and have a wide selection of Runes to choose from. Having the 20 maximum Rune pages available before you reach level 30 is not going to really help you out nor will it help you if you have a limited selection of Runes. In the same frame of logic having all the Runes available but only having a few Rune pages isn't going to yield much benefit.
By making use of the Rune Combiner in your profile you can make the purchase of Tier 1 Runes worth while. These Runes give about half the benefit of their Tier 3 counterparts but cost around 10% as much. Buying these Runes will improve your pre level 20 game play without costing you much in the way of your precious IP. It requires 25 Tier 1 Runes to make one Tier 3 Rune and although the resulting Tier 3 is generated at random there is a good chance that you will actually come out ahead on this. What I mean by this is that you can get a Tier 3 Rune whose value is higher than what you spent in total on the Tier 1 Runes you combined to make it. This doesn't mean you should go crazy buying Tier 1 Runes and combining them in hopes of getting something good. That is not a gamble worth taking.
Now then. If you didn't know already you unlock a new Rune slot every time you level up. You begin with one Mark slot and upon reaching level 2 you open a Seal slot and then at level 3 a Glyph slot. It cycles back to Marks again and continues that pattern until you hit level 10 when you get your first Quintessence. It switches back again after this and cycles through the lesser Rune slots until you hit level 20 and again until level 30 when you unlock your last Quintessence.
What we are concerned with prior to level 20 and Tier 3 Runes are your first 19 Rune slots which consist of 6 Marks, 6 Seals, 6 Glyphs, and 1 Quintessence. Given that you need 25 of the Tier 1 Runes to make a Tier 3 this works out perfectly and I'll explain why.
I feel its necessary to point out that when you purchase a Rune you can use it one every Rune page you have. You do not have to buy the same Rune more than 9 times in the case of the Mars Seals and Glyphs or 3 times in the Case of Quints.
So here we go. For the low cost of 540 IP you cant get these 24 Tier 1 Runes and be set up for both AD and AP champs and only have to buy one more to get what you need to combine your way to a Tier 3 at level 20.
Lesser Mark of Armor Penetration x6
Lesser Mark of Magic Penetration x6
Lesser Seal of Armor x6
Lesser Glyph of Magic Resist x6
I know this doesn't include a Quintessence and there is a reason why. There are only a few Quints that would be universally useful to both AD and AP champs and their cost is relatively high compared to their benefit in my opinion considering we're trying to get the best yield from your IP. It is easier and cheaper to pick up one more of the lowest cost Tier 1 Runes upon reaching level 20 so that you can combine.
The cost of Tier 3 Runes range from 205 IP all the way up to 2050 IP so you have the potential to save 1510 IP by doing this. Of course you also have the potential to lose up to 235 IP. Now this is where the not buying that Tier 1 universal Quint makes sense. You'd spend 165 IP on one of those and that would boost your total investment to 705 IP which isn't all that high but it also increases your potential loss up to 400 IP. The choice is yours though and if you do Decide to get a Tier 1 Quint I suggest buying one of the following.
Lesser Quintessence of Movement Speed
Lesser Quintessence of Health
or Lesser Quintessence of Health Regeneration
Now that we are done covering the Tier 1 Runes we can move on to the Tier 3 and the things you will want to make the best use of you IP and available Rune pages.
The first thing I'm going to cover here is the absolute cheapest Universal Tier 3 Rune page that you can run for absolutely ever Champion in the game.
Greater Mark of Attack Damage x9
Greater Seal of Armor x9
Greater Glyph of Magic Resist x9
Greater Quintessence of Gold x3
This set up will cost you a grand total of 7080 IP which is easy to build up by the time you reach level 30. The increased attack damage makes your basic attacks hit harder and will make last hitting minions easier on any Champion you play. The Gold per ten Quints will help you buy your items faster than the enemy and because of that will help make up for not having more offensively oriented Quints. This set up is also one that will work no matter which role you play and especially helps with Support who generally lack for gold.
The other universally useful Rune page set up which works for anyone involves buying the Hybrid Penetration Runes however these Runes are expensive and the Marks alone cost 7380 IP. Going with these will give you more of an offensive boost on any Champion you decide to play though.
If you aren't looking to spend as little IP as possible on Runes and don't want to run the same page for everyone I advise doing something similar to what I suggested for the Tier 1 build. Go with one Rune page for your AP Champions and one for your AD Champions.
Greater Mark of Armor Penetration x9
Greater Mark of Magic Penetration x9
Greater Seal of Armor x9
Greater Glyph of Magic Resist x9
These Runes alone will cost you 11070 IP and you haven't gotten your Quints yet. The addition of three Quints will raise this price by another 1545 to 6150 IP depending on what you get.
For your Quintessences you really have a ton of options.
Typical builds will usually go with Attack Damage for the AD page and Ability Power for the AP page but going with even more penetration is also good. Flat Health Quints are a good purchase and can greatly increase your survival rate. Movement Speed is a boon on many Champions especially for those who Jungle. Life Steal and Spell Vamp will increase your sustain. This is where you really have to tailor your Rune pages to the way you play. Purchase more offensively based Quints if you feel your offensive capabilities need a boost. Go with defensively based Quints if you need more survivability.
If you manage your IP well and get your First Win of the Day every day or at least as often as you can even if it requires just playing a beginner bot match you will find that you have plenty of IP available for getting the basic Runes you need and also to pick up plenty of Champions. Be aware of the cost of the Runes you wish to purchase and plan out which ones you want to have so that you know how much IP to save up ahead of time. This will make the process much easier.
As a final note I suggest that you look up guides for the champions you most like to play and see what types of runes are suggested for them. Use this information to guide your Rune purchases and get the Runes you will be able to use on the most Champions first.
I hope this guide is useful and beneficial to at least one person. If it is then it has been well worth the effort spent to create it.
