1. Insert the iPod plug from one end of the iPod cable into the connection socket on the bottom of the iPhone. Insert the iPod cable's other plug into a USB port on the PC running Windows.

2. Click "Start." Select "iTunes" from the "All Programs" pop-up menu. Click the icon of the iPhone that is in the left side of iTunes. Select "Back up" from the pop-up menu.

3. Click the "Start" button at the bottom of the screen once the confirmation panel at the top center of iTunes states that the backup is done. Select the default Web browser, for example, Internet Explorer, from the "All Programs" pop-up menu.

4. Enter the Web address for a Windows-based jailbreaking program in the address field at the top of the browser, for example, the Blackra1n program (see Resources). Click the download link on the Web page to download the program to the desktop.

5. Double-click the file once it's downloaded. Click the "make it ra1n" activation button on the program's screen. The program will now jailbreak the iPhone and cause it to reboot when this is done.

6. Quit the jailbreaking program. Right-click the icon of the iPhone that is in the left column of iTunes. Select "Eject" from the pop-up menu. Quit iTunes. Disconnect the iPod cable from the computer and from the iPhone.
