Call Of Duty 2 Review

Multiplayer
When the original Call of Duty was released a few years ago, it made an impact both on critics and on consumers. Call of Duty's visceral action struck a chord with PC shooter fans, thanks to a well designed campaign, enjoyable multiplayer, and outstanding sound effects. If you liked those aspects of the original, then you're sure to enjoy the sequel, which stays true to the strengths of its predecessor, while enhancing the sense that you're just one soldier in the middle of a massive war machine. It doesn't really break any new ground, but the game nails the core aspects of first person shooter gameplay so well that it doesn't need to. I say this is a game for people who like first person shooter games.

Campaign
As in the first game, Call of Duty 2's campaign will put you in the shoes of a few different soldiers fighting for different Allied factions. You start off as a private in the Russian army, visciously fighting off the invading Germans in Moscow and Stalingrad. The British campaign is unlocked after beating the first Russian mission. For most of these missions you'll be fighting in the sand-swept deserts of North Africa alongside the Desert Rats against Field Marshal Rommel's troops. The final mission in the British campaign sends you to the bombed-out houses and hedgerows of Caen, France. After you're done with that, you'll play as an American corporal in Europe. Yes, you will be doing a D-Day landing, but not on Omaha Beach or Utah Beach, which you've probably played several times before. Instead, you'll be scaling the sheer cliffs of Pointe du Hoc as artillery with the Army Rangers. If you already thought rock climbing was an "extreme" sport, try doing it with artillery and machine-gun fire raining down on you.

Each of the game's 10 missions is broken up into a few different stages. If you play the game on regular difficulty, you could blow through it in about 10 hours. Ratcheting up the difficulty a notch makes the game much harder and more tactical (this is probably the experience the designers intended). Since you'll be creeping and peeking more carefully through all the encounters, you'll lengthen the campaign significantly, and enjoy it more.

ModernWarfare 3 Spec Ops!

Spec Ops mode, however, will keep you entertained. Two player, both online and split-screen, Spec Ops missions are back and harder than ever to finish, especially on veteran. Teamwork is key, and you need a capable buddy, who you are bound to yell at, to get through challenging objectives. The new mode, Spec Ops Survival, is the best addition to MW3: Fight against endless waves of enemies from heavily armored infantry, to dogs with C4 strapped to their backs, juggernauts, and enemies suited for chemical warfare. There is a currency system, so kill everything and anything in your path to earn money to buy and/or upgrade your weapons, explosives, and air support like predator missiles, and even a U.S. Delta squad can be called in to help you survive the waves. Trust me, you will need it. This mode serves as a great way to not only go on a fun killing spree but also become accustomed to the maps, since every map is taken straight from multiplayer.

Skirm Review:

The flexibility of the combat comes from the ease with which the hero can wield two weapons, shields, or spells, whether that be a sword and shield, dual-wielded daggers, a two-handed greatsword, or dual-wielded spells. Well-timed blocks and strikes become deathblows and ripostes, while sneak-attacking enemies multiplies damage significantly. Switching between first-person and third-person provides further tactical precisoin by zooming in and out, and the favorites list allows for shortcuts to specific builds. However, console owners should not have been given only two build shortcuts and deserved a different shortcut system entirely.

All of this alone would have secured Skyrim as a momentous achievement, but then to combine it with majestic vistas, a fluid orchestral soundscape, a seamless time and weather system, the architectural detail of each major city, extensive literature, group factions, and dragons that can swoop down from anywhere without warning propels Skyrim into the hall of legends. Even with the occasional glitch and the linearity of most side quests, it cannot be denied.

Professor Layton and the Last Specter Review:

I'm gonna be like you, Professor!

Ever the English gentleman, Professor Layton may be humbly taken aback by the word Laytonesque in the opening cut-scene, but that perfectly describes his latest adventure, Professor Layton and The Last Specter. Everything that fans want and expect from a Professor Layton title is here for all its worth in picaratsbrainteasers steeped in verbal and mathematical trickery, a rustic town wrapped in a veil of secrecy, a mystery wrought with danger and disguise, static screens that entice players to tap every object for hint coins and hidden puzzles, and of course a lot of furious memo scribbling.

As advertised, The Last Specter explores the fateful meeting that paired the Professor with his still uncomfortably young boy apprentice Luke. Like his (soon-to-be) future excursions, this prequel begins with the Professor receiving an urgent letter to help a friend in need who claims that a gargantuan legendary specter is ransacking his hometown of Misthallery. Layton speeds toward the foggy hilltop town in his Laytonmobilejust how many Laytonesque portmanteaus can they make?but not before being abruptly introduced to his new assistant, Emmy Altava, a camera-ready go-getter with a knack for puzzles and roundhouse kicks.

Saints Row The Third
Release Date:November 15, 2011
Developers: Rockstar Games
Platforms:Xbox360.PC.PS3

Gameplay:The Third retains the blend of third-person action and driving sequences in open world, urban warfare format that is traditional in the Saints Row series. The player, as the leader of the Third Street Saints, can explore the city of Steelport, performing main missions that progress the game's story, and side missions. These side missions include Activities, mini- initiated at various points in the game world, Strongholds, rival gang bases that can be taken over to control a section of Steelport and; Flashpoints, on-the-spot gang warfare. Successful completion of missions can earn the player in-game money, weapons, cars, and gang respect. Previous Saints Row games used respect as a way to unlock story missions; The Third uses respect as experience points which the player can then spend to improve specific attributes of their character, such as melee combat or firearms skills.[7] A leveling system is introduced, and the player selects these attributes, or 'perks', each time the player character is leveled-up. Money can be used to purchase clothing items, weapons and cars, or may be used to upgrade weapons and cars with unique features, such as adding scopes or extra barrels to a weapon, which are then stored in the player's arsenal.[7] Money can also be used to upgrade the Saints gang, customizing their appearance, outfits, and headquarters. The "Initiation Station" system allows players to upload their character creations to The Third's online community, and download other players' creations to use with their save-game.[9] Within The Third, the player can set up to four different appearance styles for their gang.[7] Finally, money is also used to purchase shops and other properties within Steelport, which in turn will become a steady stream of income for the gang over time.

Game Review: Skyrim

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Synopsis:

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth installment in The Elder Scrolls action role-playing video game series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It was released on November 11, 2011 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Skyrim's main story revolves around the player character's efforts to defeat Alduin, the firstborn of Tamriel's primary deity Akatosh. Alduin is prophesied to destroy the world. Set two hundred years after Oblivion, the game takes place in the land of Skyrim, which is in the midst of a civil war after the assassination of the High King. The open world gameplay of the Elder Scrolls series returns in Skyrim; the player can explore the land at will and ignore or postpone the main quest indefinitely. Following its release, the game received universal acclaim from critics.
General

Well personally this is one of the greatest RPG's that i have played in a long time, probably since Oblivion. This game did not directly follow in the large footsteps of Oblivion, but it actually takes place about 200 years after, but the affect that Oblivion had to the story of this game is largely encountered.

The amount of interaction to the world of this game is immense. You can buy houses, like always, not have to choose a certain class is the one that you have to improve throughout the game, get addicted to drugs (skooma, moonsugar), and even get married, just to name a few. Also just for a little warning, once you kill somebody, there is no bringing them back.

The combat in this game should also not be forgotten. There is a large amount of flexibility to dual-wielding, having magic in one hand and a one handed weapon in the other, having magic in both hands, or having a two handed weapon like a longsword or a two-handed mace. Also there is a number of different shields that you can use, and when combined with some well timed blocks, you can become quite the combatant. There is also a very helpful favorites list that is a great help to you in combat so you do not have to scroll through the menu to find a spell that you might only use once. There is also a nice little cinematic when you are finishing off that last enemy with a death blow to the head, that makes all of that fighting worth it in the end.

All of this combined with some of the best graphics found in any RPG to date make it one of the best RPG's to ever be played on consol or computer. Also things like some great sound effects, amazing time and weather system, an amazing amount of detail put into every little nook and cranny of every house of every city, the extensive amount of books to be found on your adventures, factions that you can side with to change the ever changing world of Skyrim, an almost endless amount of side quests, and a never ending amount of Dragons to top it all off, easily put it at the top of my favorite games to date.

Over all rating for this game: 10/10
IGN Rating: 9.5/10

Afro Samurai

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Published by: Surge
Developed by: Namco Bandai
Genre: Third-Person Action
Number of Players: 1
Release Date:
Europe: Q1 2009
Anime Profile: Afro Samurai
Also Available On: PlayStation 3

Synopsis

The story told in Afro Samurai isn't a sequel to the popular anime but more of a re-imagining of the origin we all know and love. As a child, Afro witnesses the murder of his father -- a badass swordsman -- in a duel for the No. 1 headband, which is basically the symbol of the greatest fighter on the planet. From there, Afro focuses on getting the No. 2 headband and avenging his father. On this journey, he'll make friends, make love, and make a whole lot of people die thanks to his trusty katana. The story itself is solid and intriguing, and it makes a somewhat decent appearance in the game, although if you have never seen the show, the emotional impact and the finer points of the story will be lost on you. Thankfully, Samuel L. Jackson is on hand to voice Afro and his insane sidekick Ninja Ninja.

Story

You play as Afro, who as a child witnesses the murder of his father in a battle for The Number One Headband worn by only the worlds greatest fighter. You can probably guess what happens from here, Afro vows to obtain the headband and avenge his father in the process. Its a pretty straightforward tale of revenge with a few decent plot twists thrown in, but odds are most of them will go over your head unless youve familiar with the source material. Samurai has a habit of introducing essential plot elements and characters in one scene, and theyre never heard from again. Of course, a licensed game is meant to bring a larger audience to the brand but is it worth it when you constantly feel like youre missing a giant part of the games story?

Gameplay

it initially offers the good kind of button-mashing, rewarding mindless, repetitive input with spectacular and varied output. Afro Samurai is a simple hackandslash in which you tap out kick, light attack and heavy attack combos to keep enemies at bay - usually at least three at a time - and then bloodily dismember them. You also get a jump, a pretty inviolable block, and Focus, which is charged up by executing combos. Focus can be spent in quick bursts of slow-mo that allow precisely-targeted slashes for chopping bits off people. Alternatively, you can save it and blow it all on Over-Focus - a period of fantastically gory one-shot kills, great for mowing down large crowds.

Graphics

Nice cell-shaded graphics and use of multiple frames on the screen to create a comic book effect. The amount of ways an enemy can die helps keep the action interesting.

Audio

Absolutely amazing music and voice acting from the show's original cast. Samuel L. Jackson's performance as Ninja Ninja is a riot. Minor sound balancing issues that can make voices hard to hear can be easily fixed from the options menu.

My Overall Opinion

Afro Samurai provides an entertaining and bloody orgy of death while it lasts, but camera issues, inconsistent checkpoints, and lackluster boss fights keep it from greatness.
The story it cool and grate to follow with grate animation and voice over but can be frustrating at times and a bit repetitive but the story rely gets you into the role of this button mashing story line

SCORE 6.5

Summary

RAGE delivers a take on the wasteland concept and does so in its own brilliant way. Despite not being full of original ideas and borrowing concepts from other titles, id Software make the whole package fun and fresh. There are some flaws throughout (such as hard-to-beat enemies and repetitive missions) but otherwise this is a must play title.

Full Review

Twenty years is a long time to be developing games for, not many development houses even make it to five years old. Yet id Software have been around since the advent of video gaming… or so it would seem. From Doom to Quake, they have wowed audiences around the world across many formats and can be said to be the forerunners when it comes to the First Person Shooter genre. They have been quiet on current generation consoles though, only supervising Quake 4 on the 360 back in its launch phase, so it would seem they are looking to make a splash once more within the FPS camp.

There has been a lot of hype surrounding RAGE, with many pre-emptively claiming it to be one of the must own titles of the year based solely upon preview material. Others though have kept a more reserved view given that they are releasing a game set in a wasteland much like Fallout 3 and Borderlands, so do potential buyers have anything to worry about?

RAGE immediately kicks off in spectacular fashion when a new game is started; you are treated to a beautiful cut-scene showing how a select few humans were put into cryogenic storage to resurge humanity after a giant meteor has struck the earth. Although short, it’s a powerful and moving scene, but it gets its message across ever so effectively. It sets a high benchmark with brilliant detail and promising dialogue and generally, RAGE lives up to this but there are moments where you wonder where all the bravado went.

Laugh at his hair cut at your own will

The premise of RAGE is simple you are the only survivor from your Ark (where you were cryogenically stored and injected with nanotrites) and you must enter the big bad world and find out what the hell happened after the meteor struck earth. Surprisingly, the government’s attempts to rescue humanity afterwards have gone awry with rogue tribes and groups ruling what is now ‘the wasteland’. Luckily though, you are saved by one of the more friendly locals around town Dan Hagar who quickly shows you the ropes and it soon becomes apparent that you are being headhunted.

RAGE looks amazing. The wasteland is full of life and character, whilst all inhabitants are equally full of detail. Not only are they all lavished with extra detail, all Non-Playable Characters also interact and react to your actions. For instance, when you approach an idle citizen, they will acknowledge your approach and look up to you as they welcome you. Furthermore every enemy will react to the damage that they are dealt; shoot them in the leg and they tumble or fall whilst a bullet to the arm will see them grasp it in pain.

The only problem here is that some enemies refuse to die no matter how much punishment they receive, not even a shot to the head can guarantee a one hit kill in some instances. You’d expect an adversary to be silenced by a shotgun blast from close range or maybe a pistol round to the head but you don’t always get the result you were after. Granted that higher difficulty levels come with tougher enemies, but a health bar would not go amiss in some instances when you nearly empty a full clip on one combatant alone.

Lady Gaga was his inspiration apparently...

RAGE never seems to step out of its comfort zone in terms of unique gameplay or innovating ideas; everything you get you have seen before in one form or another. Amazingly, you can see where RAGE has borrowed (almost stolen) from many other titles out there and put its own spin on things. Most obviously and unsurprisingly, you can join many dots and see that it makes a pattern almost identical to that of fellow wasteland title Borderlands. Only it does this in a much less extensive or unique way, although the health recovery system makes much more sense in RAGE given the power of the nanotrites you were injected with before your storage.

Unfortunately, the problems don’t end there. After what is an engaging opening sequence and initial affinity for the setting and early missions, sadly your interest may seem to dwindle. After a while, the missions’ structure falls into a rigid pattern of go here, secure object/ kill certain character, return for reward and repeat the cycle. You can, if you want to, break these cycles up with side quests or by competing in events such as racing or even a battle arena TV show called Bash TV.

Even these become boring and repetitive. The first time you compete in Bash TV (a mission requisite) you feel compelled to kill anyone before you, but personally, I did not find myself returning to the arena after this. The same can be said for competing in races; there are occasions where your driving skills are needed to forward the story but after this, races are too easy and pose little challenge. Once you have upgraded your vehicles to an ample strength, don’t expect to find yourself tearing around those repetitive circuits any longer.

He may be scrawny but he can fix your car in a jiffy

Completing the odd side quest here and there and filling in a few spare minutes with races, don’t expect RAGE to last much longer than 8-9 hours. In all fairness, this is quite short given how much scope has been given to us in the past through the wasteland setting from Borderlands and Fallout 3. Furthermore, shipping on three discs, you’d expect the game to be huge and offer masses of potential yet it clocks in way short of its competitors that are sold solely on one disc.

If RAGE did something different and offered us a unique package then those ten hours would feel adequate. Yet, with a very unexpected and short ending-mission and lacklustre sequence to go with it, you can’t help but feel that id Software could have lost their way when it came to finishing the title.

There are two online modes for you to compete in if you fancy trying them out. First of all, there’s Road Rage which sees up to four players compete in a free-for-all style destruction derby where you have to collect points and destroy your enemies as you do so. Secondly, there’s Legend of the Wasteland where two players can co-operatively play through missions that are hinted at throughout the campaign yet cannot be played solo. Many players will be unlikely to try these modes or even know they exist given that they’re hidden away on the third disc.

RAGE undeniably is a title that must be played by gamers across the board but for some it will be a bit of a dissapointment in terms of mission structure and longevity. There's no problems when it comes to presentation as id Software have crafted the world carefully and filled it with characters that are full of life. But with the aforementioned abrupt and unexpected ending, you may well feel short changed when it comes to the close.

Overall

This was a pretty fun game, In my opinion the campaign was a bit short but I enjoyed every minute of the slashing, destroying, illuminating experience. This is a great game for those interested in the Star Wars Series. The Fun and interesting part of the campaign in this game is that you don't get all the characters in the beginning of the game, you must unlock them or buy them with credits you are awarded after each game. Or do as I do and use cheat codes. Preferably "Cheatplanet(dot)com" They have all the unlocks there. I really hope you enjoy this game as much as I did. Thanks for reading
