Oops, I forgot you were in Canada. The V80's (a different version of the M80) is $140 right now in the US, but I'm guessing shipping would put it over the list unless you have a friend that's willing to jump the border. And the AiAiAi's are the same deal. Well for Canada, you could go for the V-Moda Crossfades. They focus on bass more than Beats, and are durable as hell. Go for the white ones (I've chatted with Val Kolton, the CEO of V-Moda, and he said the white ones sound better because the dye of the plastic is a better sound absorber.) And there's the Audio Technica WS70, which sounds better, but is less solid-feeling.

Crossfade:

For the Crossfades (sure, it's $10 over for shipping, but it's better to find another $10 now than buy another pair in a few months.)

WS70:

If you want better headphones, get the Koss Portapro or KSC75.

If you want FAR better headphones, you'll like the Hippo VB (80 USD from Jaben)or the Xeport 5010. They're both bassy in-ear headphones that are better than Solos by a longshot.

At any price above $10, the Solos are ridiculous. They're built like garbage, sound like garbage, and need to be babied.

In all fairness, the HD's are built a bit better. I've actually bent them weird ways and they didn't seem like they were going to break. I've heard a lot of stories about channels dying though, which is ridiculous, because I have headphones from the 60's that haven't had that problem.

or the hippos for base or are they the same? i do like the 15$ price on the others but i dont see how they could compete witha pair of 80$ ones.

skyrim-sword wrote r00t_b33r, I just noticed that you included custom cabling options on the first post.

I've read and ignored all custom cables up until this point (some claim they make a difference, others disagree).

Could you elaborate more on why/how custom cables are better/make no difference? I'm too lazy to go through the hundreds of pages on Head-Fi...

It could also be beneficial to users seeking cool-looking cables (red Monster cables, anyone? Hehehe).

I've been reading articles and reviews on cables a lot lately, and I never knew they could be so interesting! I read one where a Head Fi user tried a number of cables with his Ultrasone Pro 900 (very relevant to my interests), and he said there was quite a dramatic difference between the stock cable and a custom one using Moon Audio Blue Dragon. He says it was very clear that the sound signature was changed and the sound stage was widened (if I remember correctly). To me, that's worth it!

I'm going to recable Grado SR80is with Canare Starquad (dual-entry and removable) and compare it with the stock cable. It's for practicality since the stock one is ruined, but I'm expecting to see some sort of SQ difference. People on Head Fi who are into cables really seem to be convinced there are huge differences, and I have no reason not to believe them yet.

Budget: About $50-$80 USD

Music preference: Rap, hip-hop, little bit or rock (metallica, avenged sevenfold, etc.) and just recently dubstep

Type / form factor and portability: I'd rather have some that are portable and look good, but if not that's totally fine. Over ear or in ear is fine with me.

Open/Closed (Not for in-ear): Doesnt matter

They're not made to compete, but both are great bassy options at their price range (possibly the best). If you're into bass, I would get the 5010s over the 7010s since the 7010s are marketed as "flat," and you're probably looking for a more bass-oriented headphone. I would honestly order the Xeport 5010s and a pair of Koss KSC75s jut to try them. They're both just so great and just so cheap, that they're worth having! I have multiple higher-end headphones and even a pair of Portapros (VERY similar to KSC75s), but I'm going to pick up both of these.
