JxndWat wrote I got a recommendation for AKG K 518 DJ Headphones and I bought them not realizing that over ear apparently is better for bass. Is this true could I buy better "bassed" Over Ear headphones for a lower price?

It's not necessarily better for bass. The rationale to this is that circumaurals (around ears) create more of a seal, therefore create a better chamber between the driver and your ear canal. Bass dissipates more readily than treble or midrange, so to have the most bass, a proper seal is needed. It's easiest with circumaurals because it encompasses your ear, but it's completely possible to have awesome bass with on-ears, like the K81. The trade-off is that they aren't very comfy.

The big problem with circumaurals is that they usually require either large drivers (Sony XB1000 is a good example, with its 70mm drivers, or as a less hyperbolic example, the much cheaper Sony XB700) or some intense workarounds with small drivers (AKG is a good example since they use 38mm drivers but have awesome sounding headphones) to have both good bass and good everything-else. This requires the headphones to be rather expensive. Sure, you can get a Panasonic HTF600 and have more bass, but since they're so bass-centric, they sound mediocre in everything else. If you don't care about anything other than bass, the HTF600 is for you, but I hesitate to recommend them ever because of how much I disliked them.

If you want the K81's to be comfier, people like to use velour Sennheiser HD25 pads.

The Audio Technica AD700 is a legendary headphone for gaming. Better than any Trittons, Turtle Beaches, Astros, or any other headphones labeled as "gaming." It does not have an integrated mic, but the Zalman ZM-1 can clip onto the cable. It's an extremely good mic, especially considering the price. Better than boom mics of "gaming" headphones.

These are listed as "Frequently Bought Together" on Amazon. They're a killer combo and will be considerably better than other gaming headsets for much less.

I'm assuming you mean around $50, but anything above $50? The JH Audio JH16 Pro has incredible bass for a custom IEM. You'll definitely pay a pretty penny for them, though!

Otherwise, the Xeport 5010 is $30 on Xeport's site and the Fischer Audio Eterna is $64 here:

Both are very good bassy IEMs for the price. Sorry for the late response! PM sent.

The Ultrasone HFI-580 and the V-Moda LP are two great bassy cans. The HFI-580 will sound better, but the LP has some other things you might like, like awesome looks and tank build quality. Take a look at them both!

The Creative Aurvana Live in addition to what I said in my previous post. The HFI-580 is stretching your budget a bit, but they're worth looking at. You could also look at the Sony XB700.
