Stain wrote Well the sound quality is not terrible. It's just not worth the price. They do okay quality. If you take care of them right then they won't break. Granted you kinda have to go to farther lengths than you should. I think they they do look cool. No one looks cool walking down the street with a pair of Bose headphones. I also think it's special that they are bass heavy. They stay bass heavy without mudding out the treble. Not alot of headphones do that.
I do think that they are a waste but there not as bad as your saying. You overemphasize the bad things. If t=your thread wasn't bias then you would point out the good qualities.
I can certainly agree with that comment on Bose headphones, but for my tastes the Beats are a bit garish to be worn outside, if not anywhere.
As root beer pointed out, comparison is highly subjective. I myself have in-ear earphones that I find to have better durability and sound quality (as subjective as it is) than the Beats Solos and Pros, and I got them for $30 and $50 respectively.
You are right about the bass heavy part... to a degree. The Beats lack low-end extension - while they have plenty of mid-bass that you can hear (enough to make it sound bloated), they don't extend deep down into the sound spectrum, which many bassheads find disappointing, since you won't really feel the bass. If you've believed that only full-size subwoofers can provide that feeling, then you've been misinformed. There are plenty of headphones going for less than the Beats who can vibrate your head enough to make you uncomfortable should you desire it. As for not mudding out the trebles, there are plenty of headphones with v-shaped or "fun" sound signatures (emphasis on lows and highs) out there.
My friend once joked with me that we should dress up as "douches" for Halloween and buy some fake Beats as accessories since they're so cheap... yeah that's basically what some of us think about people who flaunt them. Bose -> yuppies/douches, Beats -> wannabes/douches
You should know the term "young money" by now. Needless to say, we don't believe that it's a compliment.
Aesthetically, I find them distasteful. Material-wise, they're inferior compared to the competition. Same with the build. Sound-wise, they're mediocre from the MSRP all the way down to the $50 range. For $40 I'd buy the Beats - then turn around and sell them on eBay for the full MSRP, knowing all too well that some sucker will bite.
Excuse me for my sharp tongue, but I am just sick of the people who try to argue in favour of these headphones without having prior experience with other headphones in the same price range.

r00t_b33r wrote Name me some good qualities. I'll name you what I find to be the three basic factors by which you can judge headphones. Consider that I judge EVERYTHING by it's price/performance ratio. It may not be inherently bad, but for the price, it is godawful.
SOUND: Just plain disgusting for the price. Not a single good thing to say here.
BUILD: Dismal, particularly for the price. Again, no possible praise. Poorly designed with poor materials.
LOOKS: Subjective, but to say they're the only good looking headphones out there is just ridiculous. They're also far from the best-looking cans out there. Personally I hate the looks of them, gaudy as sin and the glossy finish is just stupid. This is not something you can call either way, really.
EDIT: My god, I wish we could all just come to a resolution about this. It's a stupid argument that's been resolved dozens of times in the past and there's no longer any shadow of doubt that Beats are awful and should not be considered. Why does it just keep coming up? I'm ready to spend my time discussing and reading up on headphones that aren't trash, but we're still so hung up with beating a dead horse to a pulp that we're ignoring what's actually important. I'm sick of it. If people bothered to read the OP of my headphones post and stopped having an attitude like my motto, maybe we'd make some actual progress.

Eh, HF isn't that great anymore now that we're all basically forced to like everything or else get permabanned. And there are too many n00bz whose opinions are overshadowing actual experience. I've resorted to reading actual books now haha.
And there legitimately aren't any good qualities to Beats when taking the rest of the market into consideration. Want bass? There are literally armfuls of headphones for that, from $10 to $1000. Want style?V-Moda, California Headphones, Philips, or Phiaton. Want portability? There are over a hundred different options.

You've got to tell me what books you're reading, because I really have no one offline to talk to about headphones.

Huh, I've noticed a bit of fishiness going on, didn't know it was so pervasive. I just wish I had more opportunities to directly experience gear... I just don't. Pretty frustrating sometimes how I'm basically stuck on square one.

I've stopped signing in on HF for a few months now. There really aren't any new IEMs that they're talking about, which I find rather suspicious.

I just finished The Fault In Our Stars by John Green (by the request of a friend that I'm trying to get on the good side of) and now I'm tackling Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace.
There haven't been many new IEMs lately. It's depressing to the main IEM guy for the website I write for since I usually have a lot of stuff. But I have discovered one cool budget IEM: the Nuforce NE600. $25 and not really bad at anything.
And r00t_b33r it's really amazing how much Best Bug's stepped up its headphone game. Within the last month my local one has gotten demos of the Pioneer HDJ2000, MJ591, and HDJ500, AiAiAi TMA-1, Sennheiser HD203, PX360, HD558, and HD280 (the 280 still sucks), AKG K550 (still lukewarm about it), AT A900X and ESW9, Koss PRODJ100 and UR40, and a few others I can't remember. Maybe soon we'll get flagships.

No. Way. My Best Buy better stock those, or I'll be pissed.
Here's what I've been doing instead of headphone things:
1. Forums/t=3809045/the-custom-pc-topic.html
2. Ponies. Yes, really. More time spent on that fandom than I care to admit.
3. Sci-fi. Loaded up my (pointless) summer reading list with sci-fi books, mostly big titles since I haven't read too much until now.
4. Work. Bringing in some money for new gear... Er... I mean... College!

Oh college...I've been more or less obsessed with college at the moment. I even have a list of nine wih varying degree of my liking/amount of depression I'd have if I got rejected from. Where are you looking at going?
