I cannot plug the monitor into the graphics card as it uses a different plug.

Are you trying to connect the VGA cable directly to the GPU? It may have a DVI port, in which case you will need the DVI to VGA adapter here's an example of one

before doing that, I'd see if you have a dvi port in the back of the monitor.
