I don't think they'll ever truly come to an end, but I do think that the popularity of them is going to drop considerably in the next few years.

All of the major companies seem to think that "mobile gaming" and uniformity between platforms is going to be the next generation.

That's why we have things like Metro in Windows 8, the current Xbox dashboard (also metro styled), etc.

Not to mention the current console cycle has been going for way too long. There are quite a few companies that refuse to develop for consoles anymore just because the console hardware is so outdated.

So what I'm saying is this... Console gaming is going to decline if M$/Sony don't release a new console soon, and if mobile gaming continues to grow, it's only going to hurt consoles. It wont ever completely die though.

There is no point of any new consoles for a while imo.
What we have right now is fine.

When the power of portable devices and laptops surpass that of desktop computers, then consoles will come to an end.

To be honest, even though PC's are much better through a performance, and even price standpoint, consoles have their place. Consoles allow video games to be easily accessible to the masses. If there were no consoles, the video game industry would be dead, because the industry started from consoles. Without consoles, the industry would not be a billion dollar one. I'd hate to say this, but even though consoles are slowing down the progress of the industry, it still lives and dies with consoles.

There aren't enough people on gaming PC's to warrant the millions studios now spend on making games. The funny thing is, if consoles were to die, PC's would likely suffer from worse graphics from developers since the developers wouldn't have the money in the first place to improve graphics. The innovation and quality of games would suffer as well, and the market would become way smaller, thus killing some of the variety us gamers have.

Eventually they'll come to an end, when something more innovative is released.

As long as there are people who like to play video games, there will never ever not be a console. It's just to high in demand. They will never go unless they make them illegal or something better comes out.

Consoles for me were just a gateway yeah who didn't want an xbox 360/PS3 when it came out yeah the Wii looked awesome I got them all but they are just something like you stated easy to use just plug n' play simple then I started wanting more and just moved to PC and nevertheless it is alot better than console I can get better quality games are more customizable and fun to mod when you're bored and promod on cod is just way better than playing pubs on a console but Consoles will never die unless like maybe they make something that goes around your head and just plays an image and you can make it do whatever you want somehow.
