All,
I wanted to start this discussion in light of recent events that have taken place (over the past few years) in respect to Active Shooter incidents in schools and public places. First of all this is not a weapons discussion. The only exception is if the conversation moves to the role of citizens with CCW's and their role in stopping an incident that is not at an educational institution. Please keep all talk about assault weapons and whether they should be banned or not out of this topic, there are plenty out there for you to express yourself on. I believe that this subject pertains to a large part of our members due to the fact that most are enrolled in an educational institution of some sort and that you need to be aware of your surroundings when you are out in public.
Official definition of an Active Shooter

An active shooter is defined by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a conned and populated area; in most cases, active shooters use firearms(s) and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims."
I would like to pose the following questions to you.
1. Does your school have a plan for an Active Shooter Scenario? If so what is it?
2. What is your plan of action if something like this happens? At school? At a public place?
3. Have you even considered what you would do if it happened to you?
4. Do you know if your school district has offered any training to its staff? If so what is it and who does it?
Edit to add: By training I do not mean firearms training to teachers and staff, I mean training in how to deal with the situation.
5. Does your school conduct drills of any type?
6. Have you and your family discussed a plan if something like this happens?
Think about the questions and post your thoughts. Yes, this was made a Sticky by me. I believe it is important to put this out there for the time being.
I have my thoughts, and will post them shortly, but would like to know what, you, the members think about this.
Below are some helpful links that provide some info.

Honestly, my school is no where near prepared for this! We have lockdowns which is where we get to one side of the room where you can be seen and turn the lights off and lock the doors and stay until its safe to come out. We have two Resource officers that are armed but they wouldn't be able to protect our whole school. its something that we need to be more prepared for!

I dont think any schools in the UK are doing this but to me I think a guard or some one with a rifle or a pistol should be placed in schools to stop shootings from happening. This is just my opinion and if any off this was to happen at my school i would freak out and hide. Yes it may cost a lot of money but you are saving lives

1. I dont think my college has anything planned for an Active Shooter scenario.
2. My plan of action would be to hide somewhere safe and until you think its clear to come out of that hiding spot.
3. If this actually happened to me at my college I would be terrified, I would have no idea what I would do.
4.Im in the UK so I dont think any staff would have any training on what to do or how to act infront of the students
5. My college has no drill for this situation but I think it would be to stay in the classroom and locks the doors until its safe to leave.
6. I have discussed something like this with my friends a while ago but most of it would be acts of stupidity.

EDIT: reading someone elses post reminds me, we have an armed police officer, and multiple security guards at my high school carrying tazers. Also, we have a new buzzer system. All doors are locked, with cameras at them, and there are buzzing systems to each door, so in the office, they have to buzz people into the building, so a shooter cannot walk in.

We have lock down drills. But i believe we aren't nearly ready for this type of event. We lock doors, turn off lights, and get in a corner. Its not enough at all.
2. What is your plan of action if something like this happens? At school? At a public place?
To be honest, im not really sure. I would most likely run once i heard the first shot. I have common sense and have been around guns alot. I wouln't freeze up. I hear a gunshot, i am running out of the room, and away from the shots. There are multiple exits at my school i can take, most of which are away from the front door.
3. Have you even considered what you would do if it happened to you?
I haven't really, but like i stated above, that would pretty much be my plan.
4. Do you know if your school district has offered any training to its staff? If so what is it and who does it?
I know they haven't, but a few of my teachers are experienced with guns and are frequent hunters. They said that they are going to propose gun training, and lots of tests, and if a teacher is fit and passes perfectly, they can carry a concealed weapon on school grounds.
5. Does your school conduct drills of any type?
Fire and lockdown drills. We had an armed robbery next door to my school, so we had a real lockdown, but it wasn't too much. Again, as stated above, it wouldn't be enough.
6. Have you and your family discussed a plan if something like this happens?
No we have not, but as you bring this up, i will start thinking, and proposing ideas to my family. All i know for sure is that my dad is going through permit classes for handguns, and is looking into a glock and a .357 to have at our house.

They told us to bunch up into a corner, that would make it easier for the gunman to kill us, right?

Fire drills, that's it.

1. The college i am intending does not have a emergency plan.
2. If that was going to happen i would go to the nearest not populated room. Public Place, I would have to leave or run to a different part of that place.
3. If it happened to me or a loved one, I honestly do not know what i would or could do.
4. Not as i know.
5. Our High School did, But not the college while i have been there.
6. My mother and i don't talk like we should, same as my father.

1. Does your school have a plan for an Active Shooter Scenario? If so what is it?

2. What is your plan of action if something like this happens? At school? At a public place?
Dont really know, other then duck and hide...I always though "Oh Im going to be a hero, and go around him and jump on his back" well obviously thats not going to happen
3. Have you even considered what you would do if it happened to you?
All the time. I've been thinking about that since the VT schooting
4. Do you know if your school district has offered any training to its staff? If so what is it and who does it?
Nope. My school district is dumb as hell.
5. Does your school conduct drills of any type?
Only fire drills. The last tornado drill was back in 4th grade, over 6 years ago o.O
6. Have you and your family discussed a plan if something like this happens?
Nope, probably a good idea to talk about it tho
Just want to say RIP to those who have died in these incidents. Its udderly disgusting what people in our society can do.
This topic has brought to my attention to learn what to do in case of a emergency, since my school does not have one in place. I started reading this, and it seems pretty good.

It can happen to anyone. Be prepared.

1. Does your school have a plan for an Active Shooter Scenario? If so what is it?
My college has their own police force but I'm not too sure what they're procedure would be. I would assume they would lock down all the buildings and have the campus evacuated.
2. What is your plan of action if something like this happens? At school? At a public place?
I would just run out of there asap making sure that I'm not in his line of sight.
3. Have you even considered what you would do if it happened to you?
Yeah a couple times I've talked about it with friends.
4. Do you know if your school district has offered any training to its staff? If so what is it and who does it?
No I don't think they do.
5. Does your school conduct drills of any type?
Just tornado and fire drills.
6. Have you and your family discussed a plan if something like this happens?
Nothing serious just talked about what has happened.
