cwc123 wrote I raised this question in the comments section on the news post of Microsoft's response to the DRM petition, and I will raise it here again.
Who the hell in their right mind, as a gamer, would advocate for DRM???
Something sketchy is behind this, almost as if Microsoft created this petition themselves to bring back DRM. It's not unlikely, especially when you consider Microsoft all too often fakes public opinion. In Japan they HIRED people to attend Kinect demos and buy 360s. There's news that Microsoft employees are allegedly trolling Reddit posting pro-Xbox One comments. Could it be that Microsoft is attempting to manipulate the public's perception on DRM policies?
In addition, if you look at this from a managing standpoint, it's horrible for the public opinion of your company. Why would Microsoft so readily heed to some random petition when they have long since stated that they will remove DRM. My friends, something very strange is going on. There has to be a great incentive for Microsoft to bring back DRM, like a massive expected increase in profits. Pretty sad that gaming isn't about the games, it's all about the green.
TLDR Microsoft may have created the petition themselves as an excuse to bring back DRM to milk more money from gamers.
EDIT - People are arguing that digital downloads keep game prices low. This is not necessarily true. Steam has low prices because of competition from other firms, not because of the convenience of digital downloads. On PC nothing prevents me from switching to another service like Origin, etc. If you buy an Xbox One, you are stuck in Microsoft's ecosystem and they can charge whatever price they wish. If digital downloads really do keep prices low, why is content on XBLA always overpriced?
Its people like you that make me shake my head "Microsoft does this and that" where did you get all your information because i would love to know.

People are voting for DRM because it opens up a new era for online gaming.
With the help of cloud you can have what ever game you want in seconds.
Imagine sitting down, turning on your console and going to the marketplace, buying COD 4 and having to wait about 1 minute before you can play the game. Then, you have the game for life, no scratches and can never be broken.
This is why we should have DRM.

Imagine sitting down, and finding out that Microsoft's terms of service do not guarantee you lifetime ownership of any game. When the next console comes around after Xbox One, you might have to say goodbye to all the games you previously owned if Microsoft doesn't include backwards compatibility. This is the current case for people that have bought 360 games on the market place. Will they get to keep their downloaded 360 games on Xbox One? Nope. What a bummer, especially since you payed more than the PC equivalent since Microsoft overprices all its content.
DRM is evil. It takes power away from the consumer. The majority have to suffer high prices because a minority of gamers pirate games...

By no means am I trying to go out and bash Microsoft or the Xbox. I like the Xbox, but I find it strange that a company wants to impose constant DRM checks on a gamer when the vast majority legally buy their games. If a company doesn't trust us with their content, why should we trust them with our cash?
As for the sources, I couldn't be bothered to go out and find every article I read. You can use Google and find it if you want.

This thread isn't about bashing the Xbox. It's about raising awareness for the dangers of DRM, and the suspicious circumstances behind this petition that feels like it just appeared out of thin air. We can go through hours of fact checking, etc. but there is no reason to. Historically speaking, companies that use strict DRM policies try to milk as much money out of their consumers as possible. Just look at EA games. Look at their DRM failures, including the new Sim City - total disaster.

Alot of people want DRM because the restrictions really are not that bad, you can still trade your games in (at selected stores) you can share your games with friends without needing to give them the disc. You can play your games once you have installed them to your Xbox without the disc. Also developers get more money meaning that they will be able to lower there prices and have better sales if they choose so. Microsoft don't choose the prices for the Arcade games the developers do and they can only select that in Microsoft points now since Microsoft will be changing it to cash they will be able to have lower prices.
Just because it doesn't say you have lifetime guarantee of keeping your games doesn't mean they are just going to take them away from you either.

Terrible argument as you can just READ the terms of service, you know?
You'll know exactly what you're paying for.
Oh and a MINORITY of gamers pirate? Ever heard of Game Dev Tycoon?

I think that microsoft put the petition out there. Don Mattrick left the company. PLUS just the way they responded to the petition made me suspicious. They said that the DRM wasn't gone in the first place after announcing that it was removed?
