EDIT: See this first: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
People have a misconception that PCs are hard to use, and can't be used in a living room environment like consoles. Look up Steam Big Picture, it's made for controllers.

The days of consoles as we know them are coming to an end.

Microsoft and Sony thrive on customers locked in their markets. Want a game? Pay 59.99. Oh yeah, by the way, the game will only work on our system. Oh, you also have to pay $60 a year to play online.

This kind of mentality is beginning to die. Companies like Valve have begun to port their markets to open source operating systems, and are currently working on SteamOS, a free operating system built around linux. In other words, anybody can build their own computer or buy a premade one and use it to access Steam. A perfectly competitive market always leads to lower costs.

Companies are beginning to use more and more free software. The days of paid-for operating systems are over. Why does Android have the largest market share of smart phones? Why is Windows dying? Why do the vast majority of servers run linux and other open source operating systems? Because developers and customers favor the lowest cost solution with the most freedom.

Fact is, things tend to move towards the lowest cost solution. Free and open systems don't charge licensing fees to develop on. People don't like to be locked in a market. I can buy a computer running SteamOS, and if I'm not satisfied, I can install another operating system and access another gaming service. PC performance/price ratio is getting to the point where traditional consoles will no longer be able to compete. PC Gaming companies are beginning to embrace controllers and living-room gaming. Steam provides online gameplay for free and has crazy sales all the time. There are big changes coming around.

EDIT 2: Steambox is basically a console, but its technically a PC. Point is, you would have a linux PC in your living room, if you don't like Steam, you can do whatever the hell you want with it, install whatever OS you want on it. If you don't like the Xbox One or PS4, you would have an expensive brick in your living room.
EDIT 3: PCs don't have to be expensive. There is reason to believe Valve can be making some Steam Machines for $500. If you buy GPUs, RAM, and CPUs on a massive scale you get low prices. On top of that, it's upgradeable. You can't upgrade a PS4 or XB1.

No they won't,
Some people don't have a PC, and don't want to play a PC.

I mean consoles have more players and get more sales.
I think people like the consoles better(of course if you're a "PC" gamer you won't.)

I don't play PC for games, I use it for school and the Internet.

Look up Steambox. It's a PC, but it's tiny, uses controllers, and can do everything a console can.
You have the misconception that a PC is something in the office with a mouse and keyboard. That's not necessarily true.

I know what it is, but it won't compete with the millions on Xbox and playstation, that's why the wiiU is quitting.

Don't get me wrong the steam box will get sales but most likely from PC gamers.
And I know what a PC is, in fact I had a lot of them. But it is for a mouse and keyboard. That's why there isn't a lot of PC gamers compared to consoles

Why can't it compete? Valve already has a well established market, quite a few good titles, good pricing, etc. You simply assume no one can compete with Microsoft or Sony?

When the steam box was announced and the valve stuff I bet Sony and MS were laughing.

Why can't it compete?

Steam- 950k players

Xbox+Sony= over 100million active players

I'm not saying the steam console is going to be bad I'm just saying its going to have its set players and not people leaving the "top dogs" for it

PCs will never outgo consoles. People love the simplicity of a console, just plug in and play. Whereas with the PC there's a lot more involved. Like building it. A lot of people like to build their PCs. If you buy a prebuilt for gaming you're going to have to spend a ton of money to get one that will actually play games well. People always think you will need a mortgage to get into PC gaming, so they just stay away from it and stick with consoles.

PCs are for the more serious gamer kinda. People that will go to the length to build their PC, spend a bit of money on it and buy the games just to game. The alternative would be just to buy a console, plug it in and play, but that's too simple.

I'm sure there was a video about this on youtube before explaining why PC gaming would never overtake console gaming.

950K players on Steam? Where are you getting those numbers from? There are over 5 million on right now. There are only 46 million total Live users, and that's including silver members! Usually only 10% of users are actually online.

Why bother saying this, i own a xbox and computer. I will be honest the graphics are better on the computer obviously however i still play the xbox a lot as its easier to play with friends and still quicker to start the game. It doesn't matter what people play on as long as they are enjoying it, its just personal preference

So you corrected my numbers and still proved your self wrong.
Live players-over 46 million
What about Sony?
Doesn't matter about silver membership, they're still connected to Live.
