So, about a week ago I was burning things in my backyard, and when I went to put out the stick, some of the ash resparked and ended up catching my garage on fire. It wasn't a big fire, and the fire department came. The Fire Inspector came and said that if I didn't write a three page paper over what I learned, I could be charged with arson.
After they left, I went inside and googled what arson was, and the definition said, "Arson[1] is the crime of intentionally and maliciously setting fire to buildings, wildland areas,[2] vehicles [3][4] or other property with the intent to cause damage. It may be distinguished from other causes such as spontaneous combustion and natural wildfires. Arson often involves fires deliberately set to the property of another or to one's own property as to collect insurance compensation.[5]"
I didn't mean to set it on fire, and clearly it's not for insurance compensation because I have to pay for everything.
*Main point of this topic: Can they really charge me with arson?

You can also be charged with arsen for being carless/ reckless and starting something on fire. It doesnt necessarily have to be someone set out to burn down a building.

Ohkay, thanks man, but here's my next question. Can the Fire Department charge me, or do my parents have to? Or both?

It was on private property owned by your parents( I assume), so the fire department has no authority to charge you for anything.

Yes, it is entirely possible to be charged with arson, an good lawyer could potentially save you from being entirely charged with felony.

I don't think you understood the question
Since I burned the side of my parent's garage, are they the ones who can decide to charge me with arson? (The fire marshal said that the Fire Department can charge me)
